Desire direct from O2, locked or just branded?

As per title, have read through some of the threads but not found a definitive answer to this.... I am getting a cheap O2 desire through my girlfriend's contract and wanting to put an Orange SIM in it, will it be a straight forward case of dropping it in or will there be any unlocking required first?

Every O2 handset I've ever used has been unlocked but I wasn't sure if the same applied to the newer smartphones.

Also if they were to release an update would I need an O2 specific one or would the "stock" updates work fine with an O2 handset?

As Bunjiweb stated, though yours is cheaper over a year, I assume you're actually on a 2 year deal?

Mine arrives tomorrow so can anyone else give any info on this? Im sure there must be more than a couple of people on the forums with a HTC Desire on O2?
