Root should i root even if keeping non custom rom?

i have a stock N1 (not rooted) running the leaked froyo rom (FRF50). im trying to decide whether or not i should root it since i dont plan on installing any custom roms (froyo is so awesome to begin with). also it's important to me that i still get all the system and app OTA updates. so other than being able to install custom roms, what would rooting get me?

also if i root and keep the stock rom will it affect the system in any other way? AFAIK i should still be able to get all OTA updates but im wondering if there is anything else i should be aware of.

Sorry wasn't very clear the first time......no to rooting at all. Very little point if you are not going to use custom roms.

I rooted so that I could have wifi tethering for free with 2.1. I live so far in the boonies that cable/broadband is physically unavailable in my town. We only have dialup, and even that is only 28.8 kbps thanks to old phone lines. My phone's connection is actually the fastest option for internet. But, wifi tethering is native in 2.2, so I probably would not have rooted if I had gotten 2.2 earlier.

SetCPU is nice, and there is also the option of using the LED Flash as a flashlight when rooted, but these are minor things. The only other big thing that I can think of is being able to make complete backups of your phone. As far as I know, the best way to do this needs root.

That still a really good guide. Amon-ra just updated his recovery though.I would follow that guide just be sure to use updated filenames when doing all that fastboot and adb stuff or use that same recovery file in unlockr and follow to a tee. I still use amon-ra 1.7.0. Works great

That is the guide to use - it is reasonably straight forward, plus, you can use both text and video guides (I used them both simultaneously when rooting for the first time).......

flashed the updated amon-ra image and used cyanogen's quick rooter for froyo. now to overclock!

i'm on the same boat as the OP.

i had a mytouch prior to the nexus. I pretty much HAD to root. for wifi tether, overclocking, APPS2SD and the CM was a lot faster then STOCK 1.6 TMO.


But with the 2.2, there hasn't been a real need. wifi tether is BUILT-IN, flash light as well. APP2SD shows up but isn't working YET. I dont need to overclock as its 10x faster then running my mytouch.

PRetty much there isn't a reason... maybe if CM does a 2.2 froyo I MIGHT go over... but really i dont know why one should if they have 2.2 and isn't rooted.

IS THERE ANY ADVANTAGE?
