Help Unable to access SD card from PC

I can format the card from the phone. I can save pictures to the card from the camera app. The phone sees the card properly.

When I plug in the pc usb cable I select "disk drive" but the drive doesn't show up on the computer.

Sometimes I see the drive (Drive G) pop up for a split second then disappear. Sometimes it never appears.

I always get the "choose a connection type" message and select disk drive. The notification bar shows "USB DEBUGGING." I have tried it with USB debugging off or on.

I have also installed HTC SYnc but that didn't help (and doesn't connect).

Computer says "USB device not recognized."

It always worked fine with my MyTouch 3G. There is nothing amiss in device manager.

This is Win 7 64Bit.

What drivers am I missing?

I don't have a link, but you'll have to go hunting for some Vista/64 USB drivers. I didn't have any issues myself, but have heard others like you having them. Using these HTC drivers solved the issue.

Strange though as it worked last week using my MyTouch. I would have thought the drivers were the same. Maybe they just need to be reinstalled. I'll check it out. Thanks.

Very strange ... I uninstalled everything then reinstalled HTC sync and installed the 64bit Windows drivers I found online. Now I am seeing "HTC BOOTLOADER" in device manager with the "exclamation point" next to it.

This version of HTC Sync is supposed to be Win 7 compatible anyway. But even so, I still am unable to access the SD card from my PC through via the USB connection. VERY annoying.

I'm running Win7 64bit as well and mine works fine.

Try rebooting the phone. Also reboot the computer. If nether work try a different SD card.

I've seen this error message before on other USB devices. Typically it's the device itself and not Windows.

Strange ... the reply I thought I posted isn't here.

Anyway, the problem was the friggin' cable! I was using a cheap $1.29 usb cable from off of eBay. After wasting over 2 hours and almost returning the phone I decided to try the cable in the box.

2 seconds later everything was working fine. That same "bad" cable works fine on my Jawbone Icon for both CHARGING AND updating FIRMWARE.

I had this same problem. I reformatted the card while still in the device. Works fine now.

You can plug the phone into the PC via USB and windows should detect the SD card in the Evo as a "drive". It should assign a drive letter to it and you can use windows explorer to access it.

HTC has a new HTCsync download just posted about an hour ago (or so I was told): HTC Mobile Phone Support - HTC EVO? 4G (Sprint) - Downloads

You can download to your computer. When finished with the installation, look under Start > All Programs > HTC > HTC Sync. I was told to run this from your computer first, then hook up the phone via USB and it should work.

Caveat--I haven't had time to try it. Hope this helps!

same issue here. I think the problem was I connected the phone before installing htc sync so all the windows stuff installed.

going to try deleting all that from the device manager then plugging in after a fresh instal

OK, I'm sure this is obvious for a lot of you but this procedure (from talking to HTC) helped me understand what's going on when trying to transfer files from my PC to the SD card.

I'm using XP Home.

1. Set your phone to disc drive. Home > Menu > Settings > Connect to PC > Disk Drive
2. Plug phone into PC via USB cable provided.
3. On PC, Start > My Computer.

In my case this is where I got confused because I get both a Removable Disk F: and Mobile Device. I thought the SD would be in the Mobile Device, but it's not. The phone is now the Removable Disk.

4. Right click and Open the Removable Disk. You will see two folders, .footprints and Lost.Dir. Ignore them, and right click elsewhere in the pane, then New > Folder. This will create a new folder on the Removable Disk which you can name whatever. I created a folder for Ringtones and one for Pictures.

5. Copy files from your computer to the appropriate folder you just created on the Removable Disk.

6. IMPORTANT--When you are done, go back to My Computer and right click on the Removable Disk and choose Eject.

7. To look at, e.g., pictures, first unplug the phone from the computer. Then the ^ key to bring up all apps. In my case there was a "Gallery" in which was the pictures I had transferred from the computer. Presumeably the same would be the case for ringtones, but I'm not sure what app they would be under.

I have not tried the reverse, transferring from the SD card to the PC. I'll get around to that later.

I am having the same problem. It works if I push the stock cable into the phone really hard. I think it is a bad usb port.

Use the stock USB cable. I had a hard time with this until I used the cable that came with the phone. The ebay one I bought did not work.

The stock cable still doesn't work for me. I think it is a bad port on the phone. I am thinking a replacement phone is the way to go.
