Sprint will no longer sell ONLY the ERP insurance

I was able to keep mine (ERP) but I bought my Evo from Radio Shack.

So watch your bill... my previous experience with Ripoff Shack is that they are clueless... they sold me a "free" phone many years ago after telling me that I qualified and gave me a rebate form. After filling it out and sending it in, I get a very nice letter from Sprint telling me I didn't qualify and no amount of "but Ripoff Shack told me" would sway them.

I started a new account today and was on the phone with the people that intercepted my first phone call to make sure my bill was gonna be ok. I asked her to add the $4 insurance to the phone that covers damage and lost or stolen phones and she did it without question. She said she had to dig a bit for it but added it to my account.

I bought the phone from a friend of 10 years and got the $4 insurance, you probably just got a crappy rep. to help you.
When I picked it up at SAM's club the rep was activing it on the phone with Sprint (systems were down). Asked me about insurance and said I would take the theft/loss and rep said it was no longer available alone. When I got back home I went online to add it and it was no longer there, only the TEP for $7. Then I called Sprint myself and they said they were no longer offering it.

Mine was a new account. If you already have it they might let you keep it.

I'm a new account as well. My buddy asked if I wanted the $7 insurance and I said I'd think about it because I have 30 days, which he figured as a no, and offered the $4 plan which I took. I'll try to log into my account and see if it says anything.

I called Sprint earlier and they added the $4 ERP for me without issue. There was a small bit of confusion because in their system it's apparently called 'Equipment Insurance Premium', but once the rep and I figured out that we were talking about the same thing she added it no problem.

It still states clearly on the Sprint website that you don't have to take the $7 TEP, that you can choose one of the two if you wish: Support - Article

You should try again and reference that site if they try telling you otherwise, MisterEd.

Any more news on this? I just put TEP on my EVO line, but after researching the issue further, I think i'd be fine with ERP alone.

...it seems like it would make sense for Sprint to discontinue ERP alone since ERP service is basically why people sign up for TEP.

The $4 plan does exist. I looked online at my sprint account and it has me listed as on it.

That article was "Last updated Dec 3 2009." It's almost 18 months old. I'll call Monday and give it a try but I doubt it will work. Are you sure 'Equipment Insurance Premium' is what you think it is? How does it show up on you online account? If it doesn't say ERP on your account I would be concerned.

If that link is outdated, it's very misleading for them to leave it up without editing it to reflect their current policy; that or removing it entirely. Until one of those things happen I can only assume that the information given there still stands.

And yeah, I'm sure they're one in the same...I confirmed with the rep before adding it that it covers the same exact stuff. My online account shows 'Equipment Insurance Premium' under Services, and clicking on it brings up a description that says 'Equipment Replacement Program'.

I just moved from a family plan to my own plan when getting the EVO at Radio Shack. When on the phone with Sprint I got them to Add the ERP to my plan, the rep said it was no longer listed in the system but the code still worked, and yea it shows up as Equipment Insurance Premium on my account, and when you click on the line, it states Equipment Replacement Porgram in the subtext.

The only way I would get the TEP would be if I keep the phone for over a year (and hence out of warrranty).

On a side note, just sold my Pre at Best Buy for a $112 gift card, not to shabby IMO.

TEP = Total Equipment Protection. This covers any damage (including accidents like swimming lessons and parachute lessons that your phone takes). It will also cover the cost of repairs to your phone through the life of the phone. However, should your phone need to be replaced because you let it go swimming, they will charge you a deductible.

ERP covers replacement for stolen phones and for normal wear & tear damage.

Does that mean no deductible (except as you noted) for TEP, but deductible for ERP? Is the deductible as high as $100?
