Newer HTC Phones than Desire

Ok really not sure where to put this but I'll start here. I currently have a T-Mobile G2 Touch and I am due to upgrade next month. I am thinking about the desire but was wondering if there is likely to be anything new out around then or not too long after that might be worth waiting for.

Any ideas?

This is HTC we're talking about. Nary a day goes by without them releasing another phone. Whichever one you buy, there's going to be a better one within a couple of months.

They're not stupid though, and with the Desire and Evo 4G selling so well, they're probably not going to cannibalise their sales by releasing a vastly improved model in the immediate future.

The rumour mill says there's a phone based on the 1.5GHz Snapdragon coming, but I'd say it'll be Q4 2010 or Q1 2011.

The Desire isn't the worst phone to be 'stuck' with in the meantime anyway!

ok thanks. I was wondering whether there might even be something due out from another manufacturer that might be better (if thats possible)

The Samsung Galaxy S is out soon in the UK from the 10th and this is the advantages over the Desire:

Advantages of Galaxy S over Desire:

Super Amoled 4" Screen.

1Ghz Hummingbird Processor.

Better GPU.

Wifi Tethering out of the box.

Internal Memory as well as Card Slot.

Wifi N.

DLNA.

HD Video Recording.

DivX/XviD support.

Lighter & Thinner.

Video Call Camera.

however its Samsung, it doesnt have Sense and it looks like a knock off iphone.

Ive never had a good samsung phone ever, i dont know anyone whos had a flawless experience with one.

however everyone i know with a HTC phone loves it, even people still rocking a G1.

Go with HTC sense is excellent.

Thats just personal experience and not actual fact. I had a G1 and apart from the fact it was android it was a shocking phone in terms of build quality, software faults, etc etc.

In terms of actual facts and specs the Samsung this time is better.

Samsung are infamous for releasing a phone and stopping support and updates almost immediately. Saying that, they've formed a group called Linaro which seems to be focused on Linux based hardware compatibility which may or may not result in updates being pushed out to existing phones.

HTC seem to be more willing to bring existing phones up to date. Obviously this isn't a concern if you like to install your own firmware, in which case the Samsung seems to be the better choice.

Lack of Wireless N isn't a disadvantage for the Desire because phones can't process data at those kinds of speeds anyway :D When I run a speedtest on my computer I get speeds of 45+ mbps down (I have a 50mbps down connection) but on my phone it's more like 20mbps.

+ It's rumoured that HTC will enable HD video recording with an update at some point in the future, as the Snapdragon is capable of encoding at 720p :)

+ Lighter and thinner is also not an advantage as some people prefer larger phones, it gives them the impression that they're more sturdy!

wow im sorry to bring my ACTUAL experiences with Samsung and the Desire into this discussion.

ill have to stick to tech specs and sales blurbs next time

i would still strongly recomend the desire, if u want cheap and affordable samsung all the way, if u want a quality bit of tech get the desire.

No need to get sarcastic but your experience with previous samsung phones has no bearing on a brand new samsung phone just as my past horrible experiences with htc have no bearing on their newer phones like the Desire.

Cheap and Affordable? the Galaxy S costs more than the desire and the reason is your getting more for your money.

The only bad thing with faster, more powerful phones coming out with faster processors is that battery technology won't progress at the same rate. People moan about the Desire and iPhone batteries at the moment but a faster processor will drain the battery even quicker.

Thats not true either the Hummingbird in the Galaxy S is less power hungry.

Samsung announce 1GHz ARM CORTEX-A8 Hummingbird CPU - GSMArena.com news

Not only is the new processor amazingly powerful (almost twice as fast as the iPhone 3GS unit), but it is extremely energy efficient too. The Hummingbird can run at a high speed even at the minimum supply voltage of 1.0V, which makes it really suitable for use in mobile devices.

I too had a bad experience with a samsung phone. However, according to samsung, the launch of this phone would become a historic moment for smartphones.

Before jumping on the conlusion to buy Htc desire, i would go check out Samsung Galaxy S.
And if you arent looking particularly for an Android device, then i would suggest waiting till the launch of Iphone 4g and then choose the best one out of the three.

i was refering to what the companies do best.

tbh having used sense i dont think i would want to use another riff on android.

your right however my incredably positive experiences with the desire do count in this discussion.

ive never been impressed by the quality of a samsung phone, maybe the galaxy s will change that, but i wouldnt drop

It's an excellent point re support though. I never really understand people who get hung up on specs and reel them out as though that is the key point of the argument - it strikes me as, well naive really. The best specced phone in the world is pants if the company forgets about it the moment you buy it. Having said that, HTC are OK but the HTC Hero update fiasco shows that they are not exactly a shining example of through life support.
