U.K.
So on my Tmobile G2 (Hero) i can browse the web, bbc news or whatever and when i get bored of that i flip back to my home screen.
As i understand it, the browser will still be active in the background and it will still be where i left it if i go back.

How do i stop that happening. ie, best way to kill the browser being active or does it do it itself after an amount of time?

Android will kill the application if it needs the resources (eventually). But you could download advanced task killer (search atk on the market) and then just add the programs widget to your home screen. Every time you exit the browser, just tap the widget and all running tasks will be killed.

Mmmm, i thought about task killing apps but i've heard a lot about stuff not working properly like alarm clocks.
I've seen the recomendation on the HTC Hero sticky for "Force Close Button" app which resides in the notification tray and kills relevant apps.

I'm not sure which way to go, or even whether to worry about it since my data cap is 3gig per month with T-Mobile on Android phones.

The beatuty of Android is it's multitasking, i.e. you can set the browser doing something, switch to something else can come back to it later, and everything is as it was.

However if you really feel the need to be in control of when the app is terminated, you can get task killer apps in the store.

However the reality is, you shouldn't need to worry about it.

I too was struggling with this same problem in the beginning. but ubtil found this taskiller app in android market. its jus one 'k' taskiller it allows u to kill oly the specific tasks u want and does everything in a single click... i will recommend this app to all htc hero users.
