The new update June 2010 question

I noticed the update on the phone says it is 2.2 update (however I have not installed it)

is it the real android 2.2 or is it a sprint calling a 2.1 the 2.2 update?

2.2 is available from google, yes, but not for the Hero. There's a very rough version on xda that a few people have put on their phones, but it's by no means ready for everyday use

then I wonder why it is under the HTC software update section of phone and it is called the 2.2 update...

A trick to get us to install it so you can not root?

thats if you have the older 2.1 update

the 5.1 didn't give you the "HTC software update" link


I just wanted to know if it is the real deal android 2.2 before I think about downloading it. but I am thinking of rooting this week so I am holding off

On my Sprint Hero, I also have a "System Upgrade", no. 2.27.651.6.

Not sure if it's an upgrade to the build or to the software - both are number 2.27.651.5 on my phone. Probably best to wait and see if there's any more info on what it does.

I do not believe the update you are seeing has anything to do with 2.2. If it did, there would have already been 83 threads about 2.2 being out lol

The update you are referring to is a software update, not a firmware update.

So I was browsing around some other threads and found out that the update is a patch to prevent you from rooting your phone. So if you plan on rooting your phone DO NOT install the update. If you don't then it doesn't really make a difference unless you factor in your resale ability.

I always believe everything I real in the internet, after all if someone took the time to post it it has to be true.

3 megabytes is an awful big security hole

the .6 patch does indeed eliminate the ability to root, but it looks to me that by running the 2.27.651.5 RUU, you can roll back to that version and have the ability to root again

I deleted it off my computer, and I don't think you can get it on the sprint website still I still have this one saved on my computer tho. RUU_Hero_C_Sprint_2.20.651.1_signed_test

I am going to try and root this week and I would like to get a copy of it just incase i need it. any one have it?
