Divx Playback on Andriod

That would be nice video player if you could play compressed divx movies without encoding them in a program to h264 or mp4.
One way I know you can play divx on a G1 Phone is to take your Divx movie and convert it using a program called XvidforPsp then put the video settings for the screen resolution for the androids phone or just select apples iphone presets and encode the video in h264 or mp4 then move the file to your memory card and open it in video player.
I did this and it works great for watching your divx movies on a G1.
Just whish i didnt have to do the extra steps.

yeah, the thought of converting all my divx files to a G1 format is nuts.

Once the flash player comes to the phone, I will be able to use Orb.com to view my movies via flash over the internet.

I use cucusoft to convert my flicks and epidsodes to mp4, then just pop 'em on my g1. A 20 minute episode takes maybe 4-5 minutes, while a 2 hour movie takes under 30 minutes. Quality's nice, size is great. On an 8gb card, I've got the full series of American Dad and Family Guy, as well as both Kung Fu Panda and WallE.

I have used Free Video Converter utility to convert/Reduce files from .avi, .mkv and .mpg sources. Plays back superbly on my Galaxy Spica. I watched Lost and Flashforward on a flight recently. Most impressive.

Not sure about the G1, but on my Droid, I use a Chinese app I found over at Alldroid. Plays divx/xvid without conversion. Depending on encoding parameters, it can be choppy or slightly out of sync, but it works if I really want to watch (or show something to someone) on my phone. It is ALL CHINESE, but not too hard to figure out the right buttons to press to get movies playing...

Also, there is YXFlash. It's pretty costly, and seems to perform about the same as the Chinese app (the app is free, but only plays 2 minutes unless you paypal them for a code).

I can upload the APK for the Chinese app if anyone wants it...I don't always check this forum, so send me a PM if you want it and can't find it...

**EDIT** Also, as far as SD card capacity, most xvid tv shows are under 400 megs, and movies I rip are (usually) around a gig...So not to big a deal to throw several TV shows or a few movies on the Droid's 16 gig SD card...

BeerKan, what kind of file size do you end up with? My DVD to MP4 conversions using pretty much the same settings as you (expect video dimensions as I have a Desire) are ending up 3x the size of my DVD to AVI conversions using the same settings for my Creative Zen....

yxflash works well, but there is the issue of either paying for the code or restarting the video after 2-5 minutes (5 minutes on my N1).

That's great you learned how to view movies/ TV shows on your G1, but what your doing is transcoding/ reencoding to another format. Your not playing a Divx video on your G1, but a h.264 video wrapped in a MP4 container.

I'm pretty sure you're on the same path as what I'm stating, but to transcode/reencode from Divx to XXX isn't new at all as what it appears to be for you. It has actually been around for quite some time. Handbrake will do this as well if I remember correctly.(and is free)

What we need now is for Google to read metadata from .m4v files correctly so all the chapter, show names and info is correct. Although .m4v is an Apple extension so who knows what will happen with that.

I'm starting to use my N1 to catch up on my Dr. Who downloads, and I have to agree it is a little annoying that I have to manually convert all these video files. I mean hell, I could play XviD videos on my Moto Q9h and I didn't have to pay for a program to do so. Does anyone see a day where we'll have a good, stable DivX/Xvid video player available for Android?

I tried to lower the resolution to 800x480 and lower the bitrate to 1500 and it looks exactly the same. The file also came smaller of course, so even better . Thanks for the tip!

Read post #5. There is a link to a free converter. The post also has the settings you would want. You need your output file to be an MP4. Since you have the Evo, you would also want the video resolution to be 800x480 for best quality.

On the phone, you should be able to play the movie using the stock "Photo" app. If you plan on playing a lot of movies, you might consider downloading a better video/movie player. I use Act1 which is very good, but costs $1.99. Let me know if this wasn't what you were asking.

BTW, If you want to play the video using the stock Photo app, you might have to place the video in the DCIM/media folder on your sdcard. I'm not really sure about that though.

Is the converter crashing or something? What file format are you converting from? If you can't get the converter to work, try HandBrake. It's a popular ripper/encoder. It's going to be a little more complicated to use, but might work better.

Act 1 is on the Android Market. You should be able to search for it once you're in the market app.

Act 1 is only a video player, so it won't convert what you have. You would mount the phone to your PC and copy the video file to where ever you want. You should probably create a "movie" folder just to keep those separate. Act 1 will find any playable videos on the phone (including your camcorder clips).

As far as converting... one more solution might be Sync Android, PSP, BlackBerry, Pre: doubleTwist with Amazon MP3. I don't know how well it works. Have you tried another video file? Maybe the one you have is corrupt somehow.

Its not working because you have a digital copy movie. It has DRM written all over it(so to speak). It will probably play on an Apple device though. Pretty much all digital copy's have DRM on them. I've got at probably a dozen movies that came with digital copy b.s. I still ripped the original dvd and then encoded it to h.264 .m4v file. That's great they are doing digital copy's now, but they are pretty worthless if i can't even use them on my portable device's. Hopefully one day before I'm dead they will let the consumer have the freedom to play the device on whatever they own.
