Just got my lovely new Desire and very shiny and nice it is too. Just one thing I want - an in-line remote that allows me to use my own 'phones (Shure SE210's if that's of the slightest interest). The supplied headphones and remote / mic are adequate but not a patch on a good sound-isolating pair.

I've seen these on the HTC Website, but only has the call answer / end function and not the media controls I would really like:
HTC: Accessory store: Pocket PC Headsets + Handsfree: HTC Desire Audio Adaptor for 3.5mm to 3.5mm HS U350 (with Stereo Headset + HTC Logo, Retail Pack): Description

There's lots of these out there for a certain fruit-branded smartphone, but not so much for the Desire it seems. Any suggestions gratefully received!

I had the HTC Hero Wired Remote Control RC E100 with my Hero, which was great, as I could plug in my own headphones. Sadly this is not compatible with the Desire, as it uses a extUSB plug and not the microUSB used on the Desire.

I have just received a SonyEricsson stereo bluetooth headset (HBH-DS200) which also allows your own headphones to be plugged in. It is basic, but appears to work ok. It cost about the same from Amazon as the HTC Wired Headset.

I've been wondering if iphone remotes work in the desire or not. Guess I'll have to plug a set in & see for myself. If not, do the nokia ones? Or ericsson? Someone's remotes must be wired up the same way. Problem is convincing a retail shop to let you open them & try.

Edit: Just remembered I can try my htc phones on my ipod touch. No dice.

Anyone got a 3.5mm nokia set?

In the end, I reckon I'll just get bluetooth ones though.

Just tried the remote I got with my N95 and the controls don't work :-(

I really need an adaptor for this phone! I use my handsets for playing music when I'm out running, and the convenience of the remote is invaluable! WHY don't they have one of these available yet? I can't stand the earphones that come with the phone, the ones I bought for running specifically are hundreds of times better!

Does anyone at least know which are the best compatible bluetooth wireless headphones? If there are any?

I really want an inline remote for my HTC desire too.

The one supplied with the nokia 5800 one doesn't work (and beyond not working it actually distorts the audio). I also tried the iLuv one for ipods and sadly it doesnt work either. The volume buttons have no effect, and the centre button can only pause/play and call the last person you spoke to. Still no next/previous song functionality :(

I am using the Sony MDR-EX38iP In-Ear Headphone with Volume Control for iPhone which i previously used for my iPod Touch now using with my HTC Desire.

They work as a headset
The play/pause/answer/hangup button works
The volume buttons don't do anything
Also the double click for next track and triple click for previous track which features on the ipod doesn't work on the desire either (kinda predictably)

Despite this volume buttons not working they are a credible option if you like in ear headphones. I was curious to see if they would work after seeing that the supplied HTC headset has a similar inline remote. Just a shame the ear buds are such an awkward shape!

Cheers

This is a problem for me too, I really miss my old headphones / remote combo from my N97.

This Jabras sound great! Can you confirm that all the contols work?
The controls work fine with the Desire. There are only 3 buttons: +, - and a middle button. The first two (depending on a short or long push) control either volume or forwards/back and the middle one pause/play or on/off. In call mode, they answer, reject or hang up the call. (I confess I haven't used it for calls yet, just playing music).

Awesome, thanks! Think I'm going to get one.

This looks great - I too loved the Nokia wired RC (from my N95) and wanted to find something similar that would let me hook up my own choice of headphones but would have the controls (not too fussed about voice, more about being able to skip sings or change volume without taking out my phone).

The only thing that worries me with BT is the amount of usage I'd get out of them before I have to charge them. I can't seem to find any stats on how long these will play between charges (it's all talk time, which I guess will be different because it's also running the mic), do you know how long these will go between charges?

Also, as I'm often listening to music at my desk I wouldn't have an issue with having this plugged in to charge while listening, have you tried this and does it work?

ISTR they are rated for about 6 hrs use. I haven't used them for any more than three, but haven't gotten close to the low battery warning AFAIAA. They use the same USB connector as the Desire, so you end up with a spare charger and only need one if you are travelling.

THESE work just fine on my Desire. Good sound and full control compatibility. Microphone works although you do have to speak up a bit sometimes (I'm in a noisy office). Excellent battery life (I use them for a whole working day for music streaming between taking calls without issues). The only drawback is the custom charger instead of mini/micro USB.

Yeah, same problem here. When doing long motorbike trips I used to clip my N95 remote to my jacket. Easy to feel the controls without loosing concentration.
The Jabra does look like a sexy bit of kit, but has one big flaw tho. The Desire chews thru battery as it is. Running Bluetooth and the media player is not gonna get much playtime. I rekon maybe an hour if ur lucky.

I've listened to music for 3 hours using the Desire and Jabra with the Desire only going down to about (from memory) 60-70% battery life at worst.

What I did was cutting the original cable and then solder my own 3.5mm jack onto it. It works like charm :D.

For the ones that can't solder it, go to your local electronic store and ask them if they want to do that for you. Since the copper wires are coated, soldering on these cables does require some skills.

I see that I can order the original Desire headsets on Ebay, if you are really interested, I won't mind to solder a few cables for you guys :).
