I'm sure many of you have seen the awesome video calling feature in the iphone 4.

YouTube - Apple iPhone 4 FaceTime: Commercial

I am suprised android phones didnt pick up this feature sooner! I think this will take off in a big way now that it has been done properly with good hardware/software/internet support.

Apple are using an open standard so we should see apps for android and other players such as skype and Qik.

now if you are looking to get a new phone would you really get one without a front facing camera?
.
I cant wait to try this on the Samsung Galaxy S! :)

Done properly??!? WFT - iPhone4 to iPhone4 only - and the only over wifi. Yeah right.

Many countries have had video calling for years and hardly anyone bothers with it.

iPhone4 to iPhone4 only...does not sound very open to me.

I've had loads of front facing camera phones with video calling. I rarely used them, so I don't think its a great selling point for me personally.

so have I but the problem was you had to pay silly rates just to use it, and it wasnt implemented well.

sure not everyone will use it much some never will, but I definately would want a new phone to have this feature.

I was talking about the quality, it has never been this good and now thats about to change finally thanks to not only the Evo and Galaxy S but Iphone also.

Apple is using an open standard which means we should see apps across all platforms! I am sure Fring will incorporate it, but we still have Qik and Skype's offerings.

I don't know...it's done pretty well on the n900, with tools built-in with the OS's contacts, via Skype or Google Talk, and 3G or Wi-Fi. No need to wait on Apple's limited access.

If it's just the n900 and symbian then it is a very small market share, it should be standard on all devices with android! :) and I am sure this will start to happen now...

Not a lot of ppl might notice this, but think about it. Right now the iphone 4 can do video calling only via wifi. so that suck, but wait, some company or someone will come up with an app or the next OS update from apple which will allow you to video call via 3g. BUT WAIT...then comes the bad part...AT&T's stupid new data plan...video calling will DESTROY your data usage...that 2 gig/month limit (I know about paying $10 more per gig if you go over). Then all of a sudden you will be paying more if you use it.

Overall, I think video calling is a great idea and I'm sure it'll become a norm in the future. Too bad the "great" iphone 4 is not so revolutionary (although apple try to make it like it is by using "cooler" terms like "facetime").

I for one can see myself using video calling so I can see my kids' face when I call them or they call me. But other than that, I doubt that I will use it much since most of my calls will be short or the fact that I don't want to look at the person on the other side of the line...hahaha
