Try downloading "smsunread" . It works with Handcent.

i just use the stock message app with SMS popup. i have no problem with the stock message app. no need for it to look like the iPhone i used to have.
I'm actually having an issue with sms pop-up and its driving me absolutely Insane!!!!!!! When I get a message, I press close and it marks the message as read so the notification in the status bar disappears but the unread count on the icon on the home screen doesn't disappear!!!!!!

Has anyone had this problem and is there a way to fix it??

When you have the Notification popup enabled, it will automatically count that message as read (unless you miss a popup for some reason. ie, out of service area, handset turned off, multiple messages at once, etc).

You can disable the popup by going into your Handcent App, Click the Menu button, Select Settings, Select Notification settings, remove the check from the Enable popup checkbox.

However, doing so will mean that you will no longer get the automatic popup on inbound messages.
