Help EVO is great, except as a phone -- is something wrong?

Got my EVO today around 1:00. Yay! I have been playing around with it and so far everything is great, and I like it much better than my Moment, with one exception: The phone.

Every call I have made sounds terrible -- muffled, tinny, harsh and buzzy. I swear my ear actually rang after getting off a 5 minute phone call. I enabled the hearing aid option so I could turn the volume down a bit and it helps somewhat, but not a lot. Even Bluetooth doesn't sound as good as it did on the Moment.

I have read other threads on this but there didn't seem to be a consensus. Is it a bum earpiece or a software/hardware issue? I just got this and it is my 3rd phone in a month (2 moments due to overheating now this one). I order them from Sprint online so it's getting expensive as well, since they only credit you AFTER they receive the phone you are exchanging for, which you mail back. I am also getting tired of setting up new phones. :lol

Don't get me wrong, I have every intention of keeping the EVO. But I am wondering if this is just how it is or if it is a defect that warrants the phone being replaced? If it is how it is, I will live with it. My cell phone is not my primary phone and I don't actually spend that much time on phone calls, so the rest of the EVO features outweigh the bad sound. But it IS a cell phone after all, so should it sound this bad?

Anyone else have this issue?

It's a bad ear speaker... I had the same problem, and on June 5th I went back to get an exchange.

Don't take no for an answer, they tried to tell me they couldn't do exchanges because all their EVOs where on hold... I quickly called bull$@#$. It's not my fault you don't get paid that much, give me an exchange!

lol, I might bring mine back as an exchange also. I've had a static after the other end speaks almost like a walkie talkie sound lol, makes me want to say '10-4 Good Buddy ...."

It's not on EVERY call though, or everytime they speak, its at random times.

Take it back. After I got it on June 4th, the actual telephone mechanism was the last thing I checked... why would I check the phone, it's old technology, I would think they should be getting that part down by now...

Anyway, it was like listening to someones voice after they recorded it, and then recorded it over by playing it through their speakers, over and over again...

I know what you are talking about.

Don't take no for an answer.

Same problem here....seriously it sounds like a mickey mouse voice when someone leaves me a message....getting tired of crap with these cell phone companies. One return for me, if its still not good I'm waving goodbye to HTC! After the faulty call quality with the incredible I'm really starting to loose faith in HTC.

It's a good phone, just get it exchanged and you'll be straight.

I have an iPhone 3gs, an Inc. and a EVO - and I had a Droid for a week. The EVO is the best in call quality. Now coming from a different type of phone - a Moment as you did - might make a difference, but overall the EVO (at least mine) has great call quality. HTC typically does not have great "phones" - the earpieces typically suck. Try another one and see if it is different.

No doubt about it, the Evo ear piece is sub-standard. It's one of the biggest weaknesses of this phone. If you're lucky you just get the some-what muddy and tinny sound. That's standard for this phone (according to what I read before purchasing it's also fairly standard for the Incredible too so maybe it's just an HTC thing). If you're a bit more unfortunate, you get a bit of buzz when the person on the other line is speaking. I got a tiny bit of buzz and I know it's not normal because my wife's phone doesn't have it at all. However, we both immediately noticed the sub-standard ear piece sound on both phones as soon as we got them.

I'm just being honest when I say the ear piece is not as good as the one on my old M520. However, that's about the only flaw in this phone. Outside of that it's awesome in every way. That's why I've got no problem with telling it like it is for the ear piece. I'm still deciding whether the tiny bit of buzz is worth exchanging it. The Evos are hard to come by now and my phone is perfect in every way aside from that. I'm not sure if it's a big enough deal to bother exchanging it anymore or not.

My ear piece sounds just like any other cell phone though, I don't notice any sound degredation like you are talking about.

My first Evo handset sounded like crap though, and Sprint agreed with me, even though I cussed the first guy I talked to out becuse he was rude and said all the rest of their EVOs were on hold... I'm still pissed about that...

Yea.... might be your phone. Could have gotten exposed to lots of moisture or something in the shipping to the store... duno. The lip right on the earpiece hurts my ear though, kinda sucks because I like to mash my phones against my face when I talk. Luck my though, the best buy slide-on hard cases add a little rounded hump over that, and not a whole lot of chunk to the already big beast. It is now near perfect as a phone first and foremost, which is what was pissing me off about the Hero with it's 15-45 second call delays, or even at times 2 minute delays. Supposedly, there's an OTA update for it that fixes that, but I'll have to have my mom do that once she gets it (I didn't sell my Hero to lower the full retail price I paid for my Evo, I just felt my Mom would like the Hero over a crappy Samsung slider. Yes, I'm a model son. /brown-nosing).
