How do you watch movies on your EVO?

Wondering how do you watch movies on the EVO.

I download moveis from a website and view them on my PC via Divx, wondering how you watch them on your EVO.

Use handbrake to format the movies into something the EVO can use. I've never used it, but I know it's a free download on the PC and the settings work for the EVO

I use Handbrake to convert downloaded videos to Mpeg4 and copy them to my Evo. Then I watch them on the bus or when working out. Makes the two miles on the treadmill go much faster with shows to watch.

I usually set the evo on its kick stand in from of me, then begin watch the video on that gorgeous 4.3 in display. Oh ya, and my eyes are open also

I should have been more specific....Aragorn understood what I was asking.

What Im trying to find out for those of you who have watched movies, like you Danduhman.ds, does the file need to be in a specific format? What do you use as a viewer?

Most the files ive downloaded in the past are Divx, which there is no Divx or VLC viewer for the EVO I assume.

From what I've read it works and is pretty idiot-proof. But, it doesn't know that the Evo has a higher resolution screen and so doesn't optimize the videos well for the 800x480 screen.

you mean two (measly) miles on the tread mill doesn't go buy fast enough as is... what's that, like 20min?

I wish the Evo's potential PMP prowess would push SDK to support more codecs/containers... this 4 year fad on 'converting' is gettin' old.

Thanks, this gives me a few options, now, where do I get movies? I downloaded movies from stagevu.com before, if you have other good sources do share.

I am lazy... I got pretty good at getting movies on to my Palm; but then I discovered Makayama software. Not free, but worth it on my BB.

Hopefully they come out with an Android port.

Guys it's so easy.

1. Download a converter to convert whatever file you have into MP4.

2. Setup your EVO to be a flash drive.

3. Double click on the "media" folder.

4. Create a new folder labeled "video" and put it next to the "music" folder.

5. Convert your video to mp4 and just drag it into the "video" folder.

6. Enjoy the movie under the app section in the video app.

I must be in a hollywood discussion thread At the Movies (formerly Siskel and Ebert and The Movies). What is the "best" video player for both evo 4G movie watching and video out to a plasma TV movie watching? Has that hurdle been crossed yet?

On the Evo I use Rockplayer, and it's pretty much played every format I've thrown at it. The stock player isn't bad, but it won't play as many formats.

I convert my movies/shows from DVD or video source (downloads, etc.) via PQDVD or DVDFab. Neither are free, but they're both like one or two-click solutions, and I got tired of dinking around with multiple apps and processes in order to keep things free. Since I'm trying to save space on the SD card (even though it's a 16GB one), I typically encode with h.264 so it maximizes quality in like half the typical space. I used to not care so much when I was using lesser resolution devices, but the Evo's screen resolution is less forgiving.

If you want a free solution, you can always go with the free version of DVDFab and then convert that output using Handbrake or Super or any other free encoder of choice.

That depends a lot on the codec (MPEG4 or H264). H264 will be half about the half the size for the same quality as MPEG4, but both will have a MP4 file extension.

It also depends on what resolution and quality you're willing to tolerate. I have found that 640-ish x (whatever) displays nicely on the Evo, and there's really no reason to go up to the full 800 x 484 resolution. If you want higher quality (less motion blur and pixelation), then it would probably be best to encode using H264 to keep the size down.

All that being said, a typical 90-120 minute movie that I've encoded in H264 for my Evo is usually in the 400-500mb range. I'm pretty picky, so at that size the quality is pretty good. The same movie at the same quality in MPEG4 and/or AVI (Xvid, Divx, etc.) would likely be approaching 1 GB. You could maybe get away with backing off some on the quality to get the size down, but if the Evo will play H264 you might as well use that (IMHO).
