Tired of hearing about WiFi issues. *Video Proof*

Ok, so I've seen a lot of threads pop up lately talking how their wifi signal is not as strong as their last phones (*coughiPhonecough*). I decided to get a video camera and test the same pages at the same time on my last phone (*coughiPhonecough*) and the Evo. One page is a mobile page, the other one is a full webpage, no mobile.

I apologize for the middle of the video, had to wing it on the spot on how to touch both buttons at the same time with one hand while the other held the camera lol.

**When I asked the wife where the cam was, she was like "for what" and had to explain how I was video'ing the iPhone vs Evo and she said "You are obsessed with this phone, I don't understand why you are video'ing it" and went to bed all weirded out lol.**

A one bar wifi signal Evo opened the webpages at least twice as fast, if not 3 times as fast as a full signal wifi iPhone.

I had an epiphany just now. iPhone is programmed to say it has a better signal than it does to make you think it's a better product. I get less bars on my EVO (usually 2 bars of 3G in my house) and always had 5 bars in my house with my 3GS. EVO has never missed a call, text message or voicemail and has great speed on 3G and wifi while the iPhone wouldn't get my calls, I missed texts until hours later and didn't get voicemails. Apple is making lots of effort to make themselves look good, including making it seem like they're better connected to 3G/Wifi even though they obviously aren't due to the speeds we see above.

^^^ This made me laugh because the first thing I do in the morning is grab the Evo from the charger and take it with me for my morning dump. My magazines are getting lonely.

While it's not usually in the morning, I'm the same way. Smartphones are great for dropping a deuce. Half of my facebook posts and texts are done from the can.

This has been going on since the mainstream adoption of cell phones.

Each one measures it's various signal meters differently. I wouldn't put it past apple to make their curve greatly favor higher bars. Given they only run on AT&T they would have to or no one would ever see more then three bars on an iPhone no matter where they were. Why not translate this to the wifi radio too just for better looking stats?

Honestly the Evo does have worse wifi reception than my last phone. It's minor but there are certain places where I work that are shielded pretty well from cellular and I usually turn on Wifi. On the Evo I get slightly lower signal strength (signal comes and goes, losing connection) than my last couple of phones. Not a deal breaker but definitely a difference.

I love my new phone but I'll call the shortcomings just like I will the strengths. It's not like night and day but in places where I had medium to low wifi signal strength before, I struggle to stay connected now.

I suspected this the whole time I had my iPhone. I'd show full bars and not be able to make a call. I stopped even looking at how many bars I had because I knew it wasn't accurate.

Testing an EVO and Incredible clearly shows the EVO wifi is weaker, plus an Android site already did a test with Nexus and Droid along side the EVO.

N900 also has a weak wifi radio, but has an option in the OS to up the watts. Still sucks for wifi in spite of this :( Oh well, my Incredible works great and I only use the N900 for media and MAME :)

That being said, I did not test the EVO with my N900. Perhaps the EVO has an average signal and the Nexus, Incredible and Moto Droid have even better wifi radios? N900 wifi sucks- without doubt.

Possible. BTW, most wifi chips allow boosting of watts via software interface, but the N900 is one of the only devices that actually allows this in settings. Even for the N900 it is not easy to find within the settings. Still, HTC could update it, if the watts are not already at max. If same wifi chip as Incredible, no reason they could not update, since it must be set for lower watts.

added:

Regardless, if you have wifi and even just one bar, that should be more than fast enough, so no harm no foul :)
