I am planning to root my DROID this weekend. What ROM do you guys think I should try out. Yes I am new to rooting the Android OS, but I am not new to modifying equipment, or Linux based machines.

I saw a video by AdamZ showing Smoked Glass and it looks really nice. I haven't really seen any other ROMS so that's why I am asking for your feedback. Let me know and thanks for the info.

The problem with your question is that you could get ten different people in here telling you ten different ROMs to load. My suggestion to you is to get ROM Manager and take a look at the different downloads available and do google searches on them. This is what I did before making my choice(s) a couple of weeks back when I got my Droid. Only you will be able to truly make a good decision as to what you want out of the ROM. I will say that the top contenders always seem to be Bugless Beast, NexBeast (a themed bugless beast), CyanogenMod, and JRummy. Hope this helps.

I would try bugless beast. He has the most stable rom out there. He just released one today. Good Luck

Hey thanks smart ass. If you're not going to contribute the the thread then don't post. I've seen a post here before listing different ROM's but I couldn't find it on the DROID board.

LOL!!!!!!

And What did you expect, this is a forum. There are 50,000 posts on the same thing you are asking. All you have to do is read, and your answer will be right in front of you. I am Glad I was able to help you.

OK This is the kind of answer I was looking for. I will start researching these tonight.

Thanks again.

I would look at the new 2.2 ROMs and make your decision off of what you think you would want out of it. FroYo has been running really well for me and for others.

I would only do this if you were really comfortable with messing around with stuff. So far 2.2 has been a mixed bag, you either have problems or you don't. I have been fortunate in that I have not had any problems but just realize going in that 2.2 is not going to be as stable and smooth as 2.1 ROMs. I suggest loading a 2.1 ROM and backing it up before trying a 2.2 ROM (if 2.2 is the route you want to go), this way if anything goes wrong you can restore your working 2.1 ROM.

ALL of them. :D

Choosing a ROM is like choosing underwear. Everyone has a different opinion of what works and what doesn't. The reason there are so many options for ROMs is because everyone wants something a little different than everyone else. My advice is to pick one, try it out for a couple of days, then do a full backup and try another one. Try as many as you feel like flashing, then pick the one you like best.

After you have decided on a ROM, then start reading up about Kernels, addons, scripts, themes, etc.

And don't forget about the many different Launchers you can use as well... you may prefer the stock launcher on some ROMs, but you may not. Launchers are almost as common as the ROMs are right now... Helix, Helix2, ADW, LauncherPro, Clockwork, etc.

I went with Cyanogen for quite a while on ROMs, and I fell in love with Helix2 for the launcher features (Ill let you look it up yourself to see what I am talking about... don't want to spoil all the fun). I loved it, but then I got bored... as I always do. Froyo came out, so I started changing ROMs every day again. Unfortunately, the developer for Helix1/Helix2 is too busy with non-internet life to stay on top of the updates, so I am without my launcher. :( I hate every other launcher currently available, and I keep going back and fourth on whether or not to revert to Cyanogen until the issue is fixed. (Cyanogen, by the way, builds from source. That means no CM froyo until source code hits AOSP.) Once Helix is fixed and there is a CM 6.0.x.x, I will be in 7th heaven again. Until I get bored a week later.

Is there such a thing? lolz

I believe it to be a myth... My grandfather used to tell me two stories, and I never believed either of them.

1) "When I was in school, I used to have to walk 5 miles uphill both directions from my house to school and back. I even had to do it when there was 6' of snow on the ground... they didn't cancel school for anything.

2) "Back before they had the internet..."

We should submit this to MythBusters. I bet it will be BUSTED. lolz:D

Everyone has different opinions on the best ROMs but you really need to check them out for yourself.

It's gonna be hard to beat the features of the new 2.2 ROMs though...I will NEVER have 2.1 on my phone again...moving on up! :D

Here are some recommendations...Anything "Bugless Beast", by Pete is stellar! Fabolous is a guide here and he does some very nice optimizations on other people's ROMs...Cyanogen wrote the book on android ROMs (ported to the Droid by Koush) so that is an excellent ROM...and then JRummy optimizes the CyanogenMod ROM and adds some nice enhancements.

There are obviously others...but these are the devs that I recommend time and time again. You can't "go wrong" with anything from them.

Thanks. I will start trying these out on Friday when I get some time on my hands.

I am going to stick with a 2.1 ROM for now. There are to many bugs with 2.2 from what I have read. I will move to 2.2 when I learn more about how Android ticks.

Go for the 2.1...that's fine. As you get into this you will soon realize that there are bugs...and then there are installation problems. Two TOTALLY different things! ;)
