Root Seriously thinking about rooting now

Ok, I've been wanting to root for awhile now but I'm still kinda scared to brick my phone. But before I get into anything, I do have a few questions.

I read that there was still a way to get the OTA if I root, how do I do that?
Does rooting give me trackball notifications?
If I mess up maybe on like 1 instruction in the rooting process, is it just that easy to brick my phone?

Edit: If anyone could chat with me to help me root my phone that'd be greatly appreciated. My email's anthonyngo93@gmail.com

I tried the first step of rooting to set up the adb but I could never get the drivers to install. Tried the usb deview thing but that didn't really work either. I looked at Section II but there's no MyTouch driver there? I'm running windows xp if that matters. And trackball notifications are when the trackball lights up to alert you of new notifications just like the green light at the top.

Google HTC Synch it should give you the drive. Install it then plug in your phone and your computer will now detect your MyTouch and install the drivers.

Then you continue as before on the Howto.

I have tried 3 different cards, and I think the 1st time I might have messed up. I am pretty sure you HAVE TO have the card you want to be the Gold Card "in the phone" when you get the CID, because my CID changed, which changed the goldcard.img when I went from not having it in, to being in.

I first tried a 512 Sans, got the wrong CID I think, edited the hex and now it won't format in the Touch.

I next tried a 4 gig Sans, did this one right edited the hex and it wouldn't work in the mytouch or format

Then tried a friends 16 gig unmarked, SDHC and even took a backup copy of the hex I overwrote and re-wrote it back into place to make it so it could be formatted again, and i t still can't be formatted in the mytouch.

So I am going to triple check what I am doing on the hex thing. But maybe someone knows something i am doing wrong.

Ok I got the adb to work and now I'm reading the gold card instructions. It says to make sure I have the adb and fast boot installed, but I'm not sure what it's talking about when it says fast boot. I see some fast boot commands at the bottom of the adb setup instructions (though I don't really understand the fast boot commands). Am I supposed to be installing them somehow?

To go to fastboot, (phone is off) hold down the back button and end button at the same time.

Then connect your phone to the your computer and it should read fastboot USB

If you go to command prompt and type fastboot devices, your serial number will pop up

"SH01YP8900304" .. something like that

Now you can use fastboot to flash the radio, recovery or whatever.

Ok I tried what you said and my serial number doesn not pop up. This message comes up: 'fastboot' is not recognized as an internal or external command. operable program or batch file.

Are you operating out of the tools folder where you installed the SDK?

It should look something like this, or wherever your tools folder is located.

C:\AndroidSDK\android-sdk-windows\tools

Oh I just did it wrong. I didn't type the cd\ and the cd AndroidSDK\tools\ before I typed fastboot devices. Thought I didn't need to haha, I feel so dumb ><

But alright, I have 1 more problem.. I only have a sandisk sd card and another no name sd card that I can use. All the stores in my area do not have a kingston card. There are some lexar cards out there though.. Would it be ok to use a sandisk card or the no name? What kind of card did you use to root yours?

And if you could chat with me that'd be great.

Well I went ahead and tried to make the gold card using my sandisk. After I downloaded the sappimg and tried the bootloader it told me I had an error and could not update. I guess I'll have to go out and buy another sd card then.

Edit: Though at the end of the Gold Card tutorial I was able to go into it and open it up without getting an error, weird..
