Root Still a little confused

I just read through the all things rooting thread and I find myself still a little confused. I know there are many ROM's out there to choose from and the rooting looks pretty straight forward but I am not sure I am completely ready to give it a try.

is there anyone here who just rooted a phone for the first time? I am looking for feedback and maybey some guidance on what to do. I am pretty computer literate but clueless on linux commands and some of the other steps/tools needed to root and flash my droid.

If anyone lives in NC I would by lunch for a walk through lol (no I am not a cheap McD's dollar menu type of guy either)

basicly the steps I need to take. For instance, how can I assure I have backed up all the data and contacts on my phone? Is there a step by step checklist out there somewhere? recomendations on most stable ROM for 2.2

You can get something like mybackup to backup contacts, sms, mms, and other data as well as apps. I know a lot of people really like titanium backup once you're rooted, although I continue to use MyBackup and it works good for me. Don't worry about saving settings since this will likely just cause problems. If your contacts are google contacts you will not need to worry about backing them up. As far as ROMs, my suggestion is to get a 2.1 rooted ROM first and back it up before going to a 2.2 ROM since some are having problems. As far as which ROM you are going to need to do some research there and everybody is going to give you different answers as to what works best with them. You will have to figure this out on your own as to which one works best for you. The good thing is that you can make backups of each ROM before switching so that you can switch back easily.

music, AK notepad, couple other things. once I root I will be able to access those and copy the files correct?

Data on your SD card will not get touched, although you can copy this to your computer for a backup if you like. Your music is definitely on your sd card AK notepad I'm not sure about. You could always explore your sd card to see if the AK notepad files are on there.

thanks for tip on my back up! I am researching the ROM's now and its funny how each android website has it's own rooting guide, and they are all a little different. I am going to continue to research some more. I am going to root, I just need to get a little more familar with the steps and terms and some of the tools.

its quite possible to root your current 2.1 setup then backup all your apps and app data with titanium backup and then restore it all after you flash froyo

I was under the impression that 2.1 could not be rooted, am I wrong? I defintiely don't want to be giving wrong advice. Or are you maybe suggesting that once the sprecovery is installed to not do a wipe when installing a 2.1 rom?

using the SPRecovery sbf you can get root. I did it today in fact, so I could test out and update.zip I made to make the process easier
