Hi! I was given an NTC Hero recently & I don't know why some smileys I send appear on other fones as "smileys" while others appear as typewritten characters OR :'( etc. Why is this?

Well, I would imagine that it depends on how the other phones parse the characters. When you send a smiley, all you're really sending is the characters that make up the smiley. If the destination phone happens to parse the combination of characters you sent as a smiley, that's how it will show up. If it doesn't, then all the phone's owner will see are the individual characters. For example, you may send :) which might appear as a happy smiley on some phones, but other phones may only parse :) as a happy smiley so instead of seeing the smiley they'd just see :)

Hey r00n :)

No , these smiley's are on their by default on Android. I don't think it is possible to Download alternatives or change them without ROOTing. But with ROOTing and following certain steps you may be able too. {Sorry but I don't know the instructions of how to do this or if it is really possible}
