YouTube - Android Device Testing at AT&T Labs

the video shows what looks like the HTC Liberty/ARia.
-At 1:56 you can see a glimpse of the screen and it looks like it running sense UI.
-At 2:23 they show most likely the rumored HTC Intruder (being blurred due to its sexiness/nudity)

and it's interesting to note how everyone is going out of their way to let you know they cant tell you anything new cant let anything leak...I think this must be one of the most pointless videos ever posted on the internet...somewhere behind lolcats...

I highly doubt their only job duties include testing android devices.

And although the video doesn't have a ton of new information, or really anything about the technology, its good to see that they are willing to show us a bit of whats going. This video is also a indication that they plan on showing us more in the near future, and that they atleast even care.

So i wouldn't say its a total waste.

I understand you must defend your company. But after such a long dry period of NOTHING. This company is trying to placate the albeit small community of AT&T users who want real android with a video that flashes a phone we've seen pictures of and basically says HA look what I have...Not for you HAHA.

Is this suppose to show us that the reason you've released absolutely jack squat for information is because you're too busy testing these devices? and Since you are rigorously testing them you cant say anything about releasing them because they might fail that testing and have to be sent back to the manufacturer? Is this just an excuse video for why AT&T can't even give us a shred of evidence that they have any commitment to android?

Meanwhile Apple is allowed to announce and talk about their phone all they want. HTC and Samsung and Motorola all have muzzles on.

You assume it would be different if Verizon or any of the other carriers got the iPhone instead. Testing the phone actually does show commitment since testing is insanely expensive and takes a long time to do. Unfortunately when they have one device and only they have that device and that device constitutes more than 20% of the smartphone market, that device gets special attention. The iPhone is a cash cow for AT&T. Android devices aren't. They are acting like any business would act under this circumstance. It makes serious business sense. If a handful of people who want Android leave and millions sign with them for the iPhone, they come out ahead. It's a business. Businesses always shoot for their bottom line and they will always step on some toes to achieve that.

Less than half of the iPhone's market share across 3 carriers does not translate into a cash cow. Assuming that is divided between Verizon, Sprint, and T-Mobile evenly that would translate to 3% market share each for android. AT&T has something like 24% market share for iPhone alone. They don't have to give Android a chance because the numbers prove it.

There is NO reason they need to "focus" on one. Apple does the marketing for the iPhone, Android manufacturers could do most(if not all) of the work to get a phone ready. i.e. How much testing did AT&T do for the Nexus 1? I have heard of a lot of people who are using it without problems on AT&T.

Yes, AT&T is doing testing and software development, mainly because they want their craptastic bloatware on the phones and want to limit other apps which could be used to perform the same actions.

I expect to see an iPhone on another carrier by the end of the year. I believe that AT&T were afraid that they were goign to lose exclusivity before the iPhone 4 launch(i.e. why they announced 5 Androids by the time it launched) and due to some deal, they were able to keep the iPhone exclusive for a short period after launch of iPhone 4...

The facts that I base that OPINION on are:

1) In January, they announced the 5 Android phones by launch of iPhone 4 timeframe.

2) As part of the iPhone launch, they are allowing anyone with an iPhone whos contract is up by the end of 2010(up to a 6 month or 1/4 shorter contract) to upgrade to iPhone 4(and thus get locked in for another 2 years. I believe they are doing this because they have been told that the iPhone will be available on another carrier by the end of the year and they want to keep those people locked in to them.

3) They launched one low end Android phone on their network with limited marketing, they have "announced" another just as low end one with no further info for over a month after announcement.

They didn't do any testing on it. Their logo isn't on it. If someone has a problem with it they can just say, "well if you want to have a seamless experience on our network you should buy your phones from us instead of a third party." They don't support the Nexus One at all. It will be the same thing for the Streak when it's released. It will work on AT&T's bands, but AT&T won't (initially) offer it.

I also think there will be an uproar if they remove google search from a high end Android device, and AT&T also knows that. The backflip was a learning experience that I doubt they want to experience again.

The theory makes sense, but I am still skeptical about such a thing happening. Also you don't know anything about the Liberty/Aria/Intruder. For all we know, they could be 3 different devices. Or 2. Maybe they want to have a high end and low end HTC Android device launch at the same time. They had that one phone in the video on youtube blurred out. Maybe that was the Intruder, which is rumored to be about the height of a coke can. That is tall enough for a 3.5 inch display. That's nothing to scoff at. Maybe both of them have Snapdragons. We have only seen one Android device from AT&T, and that's not enough to notice a pattern. These next few months will though.

Give them some credit...it will be win 6.5 when 7 comes out... they'll stay more current with windows because its not a serious competitor to the casual user experience that android is to iOS. Windows will be better for business types.
