I have no clue how to update or what I have

Hi everyone sorry my first post is a question but hey you guys know your stuff so here goes.
I got my mytouch a year ago (approximate). I have never done an update or anything and I would really like to get the most of the phone.

My primary annoyance is that we don't get flash and I WANT to watch t.v. on the phone for an upcoming very long road trip. I am considering paying for jetflix. Any opinions on that idea?

I have read, read and read some more about ROOTING and I am just not willing to take the risk of bricking the phone. I am broke as hell and can not replace it so ya call me chicken.

So can anyone help a girl out?
How do I see what I am running and how do I update the phone in general?

Thanks for the input.

You can check and see if you are due for an update, by going to:

Settings>About Phone>System Updates

:)

Oh perfect, thanks it says I am updated, so when an update comes down the line does it just do it and you never even know it happened?
How can I see if I am running 1/6, does it say this someplace?
Is donut an automatic thing or do I have to put that in the phone myself?

Thanks again, for helping I am just getting frustrated.

Donut is 1.6, and I can almost guarantee you have it. As mentioned, it's listed in Settings > About Phone.

The OTA for 2.2, when it comes, will give you a notification saying that there's an update and ask if you want to apply it.
