So it seems there is a $30 fee for mobile hotspot feature.

Are there any apps that will allow this to happen for free if you root? I know there is USB tethering for free, but I want the wifi hotspot ability. WM has this through wmwifirouter... wonder why Android can't do it too?

Someone figured out how to unlock it if you root your phone.

You can root your phone (unrEVOked is quick and easy) and then use wireless tether and you can accomplish the same thing, completely free.

That's what I did...it might be a grey area but for myself, I'm okay with that.

so this "wireless tether" that would let your xbox and other devices connect to it wirelessly right? I wonder if Sprint will cut that out

yes, any wifi device can then connect to it as long as the program is running. I'm not sure if sprint has a way to "tell" if this program is running... As long as you're not excessive in your usage -- I don't think anyone would notice.

As long as the device can connect to an ad hoc network since that's all wireless tether works as right now.

Sprint released something a couple weeks(?) ago stating that, atleast with Froyo(2.2), they can not block tethering. They wrote up a whole column about the advantages of Hotspot compared to that.

Search for it, there is a thread somewhere, and should be an article on Phandroid.

it works for most devices to use your phone as a wifi hotspot....

but. it does not work for some.... like my PS3. this is an "ad-hoc" network. Some devices do not have the abililty to use this type of network. I dont know if xbox or wii will work or not. everything in my house can see the phone hotspot, but my PS3!!!

Used Internet Sharing and wmwifirouter daily on my tp and never heard anything from Sprint about usage.

What are the disadvantages to rooting ? I'm very eager to do it but heard hackers can access my info easier once i root. Is this true? I waited 2 years before I jail broke my itouch. Wanted to make sure I knew what i was doing.
