Root Some help please in doing Toast's root?

For us n00berts?
(I already know about the unrevoked way. I even had it but I couldn't install ROMs so I deleted it.)

Then I tried doing Toast's root and got confused at step 2 (the adb step).
Now, I know a LITTLE about what ADB is and that you basically only need it so you can use your computer to type/see things instead of doing it all on your phone.

(This is the thread that I'm using by the way: [TUTORIAL] How To Root The HTC EVO ~ Part-1 \0/ - xda-developers)

1. So, so far, I downloaded SDK package, saw the "tools" folder and see the "adb" file. When I click on it, it pops up like a "command/cmd" screen and disappears. Is it supposed to happen like that? Or am I doing something wrong?

2. Also, in Toast's method, when he says to put the PC36IMG.zip file on the root of your sdcard. What does he mean by that? I'm sure it's something simple but I'd rather be sure how to "put it in the root of your sdcard". Just that mean just right in the front by all the folders?

3. Next thing the page says is: "adb push PC36IMG.zip /sdcard"
I don't know what he means by that. Am I supposed to do something here?
The steps follow this (until it's Rooted) I understand but not this.

4. Then after rooting there are some other steps he has in the original thread that say somethings about "adb shell, adb.. etc"
What do all those mean??

Thank you very much. I'm eager to learn, unfortunately since my VB and building websites using CSS/HTML days, this is the first time I'm messing around with any kind of coding.

It's a fairly simple process. Once you have the sdk installed with the right drivers, plug your phone in as a disk drive on your computer. Drag the PC36IMG.zip onto the SD card. When referring to root, it means don't put it in any folders, just drag and drop into the SD card itself. Then power off your phone and power it back on holding the volume down button. Follow his directions from there on out. Regarding the comment about adb pushing the PC36IMG.zip onto the card, its just another method to get PC36IMG.zip on the SD card, so disregard that.

I hooked my phone up, opened it up as a disc drive, dropped the file on the card and that's it. I also was confused with the whole adb/sdk thing. Personally I am waiting for the auto root kitchen to come out. But, I seen the installation of the root to be as simple as once you have the zip file on the sd card, and boot into recovery, its a matter of running the zip file, answering yes and rebooting. The whole adb thing only comes in on the recovery installation method. Is this really needed? Is the recovery portion only to do the nandroid? If there were a problem, couldn't you just flash a stock rom back to the phone in recovery mode without performing the adb method? Im also a noob to this but I would like to flash a different rom and I can't do it with unrevoked.

The first step with PC36IMG.zip is to get root. The adb commands in the instructions are to access the recovery image. You can use the recovery image to create a nandroid backup, but you also need it to flash a new Rom. There's no other way to flash a rom. Over at xda they have a new method to access recovery through quickboot or Rom manager that wouldn't require adb commands from your computer. I would check that out if you want to access recovery to create back ups and flash new roms without your computer.

That's just fancy talk for renaming the file after you flash it so it doesn't attempt to boot every time you reboot. If the file is on your SD card, just reboot.
