Root unrootable eris...please help

i am trying to root my 2.1 ota eris but have some how failed for 4 days now. i have never rooted an android phone, but have experience installing custom firmwares on consoles and other stuff like that, so this shouldn't be this difficult. i have followed the instructions from the unlockr.com and everything seems normal, but when finished i don't have su access in adb shell. the loader finds the image on the sd card, seems to flash properly, and then reboots. if i bring up a command prompt the serial number of the device shows up, when i type adb shell the $ shows up, but when i type su it says permission denied and nothing ever shows up on the phone. also when i install an app that requires root access but no custom rom they say i have no root access. the tutorial i'm using is at How To: Root the HTC Droid Eris (and Get Android 2.1)(Updated – 04.08.2010) | The Unlockr. i used the second image and now i cant use any other. if i try it says main image is older. update aborted. any help would be much appreciated. sorry for the long post, i was jsut trying to include all info.

Why the hell put link to leak in instructions to root? I hate that you missed out on root. Perhaps root will be found for the leak, but some dev is just gonna have to get really bored to even try.

Well, some of the devs over at xda are playing with the root method used for the Incredible (jcase, etc.). Our own (awesome) Erisuser1 posted some info about his attempts at trying that method (http://androidforums.com/all-things...ible-rooted-eris-leakers-next.html#post916095). So, there may yet be hope...

will i be able to do any ota updates on this phone when they come out?

Well, the good news is the your v3 leak is the same as the OTA. The v3 leakers did not receive the OTA. If there is another OTA for the Eris (2.2 maybe), hopefully, they will change the update process to allow EVERYONE, leakers and non-leakers alike, to receive these updates. So, its still a little early / uncertain at this time.

And they don't give any credit to the folks at XDA who created the step-by-step guide that they copy and pasted...

Reload the page over there and note the new timestamp (6-11) on the main entry ... and note that now there is only one download link present. Not that means anything - up until the last hour or so, that page displayed something like "Updated 04.08.2010" ... but had a link to a file (Leak-V3) that wasn't in the wild until 4/23/2010.

At least they respond when someone sends them a comment - but let's see if they print it, or come clean to the folks that they've "helped out" like this - apparently this kind of thing has been going on over there since late April.

Word to the wise: CHECK THE MD5 HASH OF EVERYTHING YOU DOWNLOAD!.

Good luck with that, most new phones being sent out have the 2.1 image on them with the unrootable bootloader.

This. I had to replace my old phone, and lo-and-behold, my replacement came with 2.1 preinstalled, so no more root for me. I was disappointed at first, but the world presses on. With any luck, the devs will find a way to root.

One of the biggest things from root that I will miss is the ability to take screenshots without the SDK, and the sheer amount of customization.

The Incredible root was the first for a Verizon HTC Android phone. Of course, there have been only two, but this gives me hope that folks will get a jolt of determination to break this baby open. We are enjoying root right now, but if our phone breaks, we are back to good ole' 2.1 unleaded. That would suck after tasting such goodness! ;)

....(gasp!)...what!?! I can't go back! I won't go back....;) I'll get hired-on at HTC and flash my own rooted ROM if I have to :D
