Help Syncing 101

I've only had my Inc for a few days and have, of course, been experiencing lackluster battery life. After reading dozens of battery threads and hundreds of posts, it seems like allowing your email and widgets to constantly sync is a huge battery drainer, but these threads don't really go into detail on how to regulate the frequency of syncing.

I think I've found how to turn off constant syncing in the settings, but does this mean I have to manually sync gmail, etc, when I want an update? Is there a way to set it to sync once an hour or is this all or nothing?

Gmail is a push service so there is no need to sync.

As for manually syncing, it would depend on the app and what you mean by "turn off constant syncing." Typically apps will provide a sync interval for you, and if you go into the settings of each app, such as Facebook or even the weather/flip clock widget, it will give you that option of setting the interval. This can range from short intervals such as 15 mins, to longer ones, such as 6 hours.

What I meant by ' turn off constant syncing' was turn off auto syncing under settings... but I didn't realize that each program has individual settings.

Push = the email server 'pushes' new messages to you instantly, sort of like receiving a text message. In other words your phone doesn't have to keep opening a connecting to check to see if there's any new messages. This is how gmail works on the phone.

Pull (or Poll) = You designate a time interval for when you want the phone to "poll" the email server to see if you have new mail. This is how the HTC mail client works on the phone. If you go into account settings for each non gmail address that you have added, you can change how often the phone checks for new mail. I have it set to every 30minutes.

If you go to Menu > Settings > "Accounts and Sync" you can change other applications that sync at set intervals. I recommend turning off Facebook Live feed unless you really care that Jenny ate a peanut butter and jelly sandwhich for lunch today. If you use the Weather widget you can change how often weather is checked as well.
