What do you guys think will be some advantages or disadvantages of getting the EVO and switching to sprint?

Cheaper plan
Not having to "jail break" your phone to get it to do what you want it to
Easy customization
open app policy (little to no restrictions on the apps that can be submitted)
Larger phone
4G
user replaceable battery
user replaceable/upgradable memory
Unlimited data


The list goes on and on. So far the consensus, on this forum at least, from former iphone users is that they could not be happier. Worst case scenario, you get the phone and try it for 30 days and if you do not like it you can return it within that 30 days for a full refund and no penalties. Just give it a try for three weeks to get used to a different phone and OS and I don't think you will switch back. If you don't like it after 30 days, then you can return it and get the iPhone 4. No harm no foul, no extra money out of your pocket. You have nothing to lose.

Like horadin said, everyone I've seen on here that came from iPhone was super happy they switched over to EVO/Android. Give it a try, I really doubt you'll regret it.

True all these things sound great! The only complaint I've heard that seems legitimate is the battery life issue.. nothing a car charger can't fix tho. The only thing I'll miss is the I Am T-pain app which is only in the appstore right now, are there any android apps like it?

I have no problem with battery life for the record, it's actually muuuuuuch better than my 3GS was.

I haven't heard of any auto-tune apps yet, though I'll have to keep an eye out.

I was in the same boat as you. I had a 3GS on tmobile. When I got the Evo I had the mindset of using the 30 day return policy if I did not like the phone or if the iphone 4 amazed me. Well after a week with the phone I LOVE IT. Android is truly amazing and although there are a few things that irk me, 95% of the time there is something in the app market to fix it. (Eg No lock from market)

The only thing Im pretty disappointed in is the 4G. I live in vegas and the coverage maps say Im blanketed with 4G. I just turned the 4G radio off because 1 it drains my battery really fast and 2 the 3G works just fine. Make the switch!

We are all working on how to maximize battery. Give the community time but I suspect soon, as we master this beast, that will be less and less an issue.

battery life is fine, plus u can get two spares and a battery charger for only $12 on ebay, cant change batteries in iphone check 3g and 4g coverage in ur area, 4g drains battery faster though. larger screen, hdmi, I have been with sprint 10 yrs and work for att mobile customer care, I love sprints coverage and have never activated my two free lines with att.

I came from a 3g on T-Mobile just today, and i really like the evolution so far. But I like to tinker a lot. If you arent into customizing, android might not be for you. I will say that the iphone was a much more polished and solid piece of hardware and software. Some of the features of the evo feel rushed and sloppily excecuted.

Tip. When typing Evo, press down a second on the word Evo in the prediction screen. Will add Evo to your dictionary. Can't tell you how many times I had to edit a post until I figured that out.

I came from an iPhone 3GS (previously iPhone 3G) on AT&T. I was one of the people who thought I had the most modern, amazing phone and wouldn't dream of getting rid of it. iPhone 4 was the only thing on my mind on the horizon, and the only thing I thought existed that would satisfy my needs.

What actually originally spurred me to switch wasn't a phone, or features, but the plan cost. My wife recently finally got a job, which has saved us financially, but last month we were really biting our nails. On average we were spending $220 - $375 on our phone bill with AT&T, and it was the one glaring bill out of all of them (besides our mortgage) that I never wanted to come because it was so daunting.

But I just couldn't get rid of the iPhone, because as much as it was screwing us, how could I go back to a regular phone? I finally came to the point where I figured I'd be going to a basic phone out of necessity, but then I saw the EVO. I had never seen a phone with so many features before, and it was like a techie person, like me, made a dream phone with every feature people could have dreamed to have in a phone and presented it to me. Kickstand, HDMI out, huge 4.3" screen, HD camcorder, 8 mp camera, front facing camera, and an OS with running widgets and no restrictions.

I started researching the plan, and the good news was that it was cheaper. I was surprised to realize that not only did I have a 17% discount through my work, but the plan itself was quite nice. Unlimited talk to any mobile regardless of carrier, unlimited text without paying another fee for it… it was really pretty nice. But the one thing that killed us was my wife texting to her family and friends back home in Canada. When I realized their texts were as expensive as AT&T I thought all was lost, but then a Sprint employee made an obvious observation. If I bought her an Android phone, like the Hero, she could Facebook PM all her friends instead of texting them. She's on Facebook all the time at home anyway, so it was a perfect fit, and something we couldn't do on her basic phone.

I ended up selling the iPhone 3GS for a whopping $450 on eBay, which not only payed for both our new phones, but gave us $100 in our pocket. Our monthly bill is not only cheaper ($125 a month) than the base price of the monthly fee of the iPhone/wife's phone, but we have totally eradicated any fees we might accumulate thanks to Sprint's plan and Android OS.

No longer do I have to open a bill hesitantly, hoping that it's not going to put us in the poor house. I know now what I will be billed each month, and that gives us more peace of mind than anything. On top of that, she loves her Hero and was amazed that she had notifications and a fully working Facebook, and I love my EVO to the ends of the earth. Everything I thought was impossible with a phone has been opened up to me, and it makes Apple's iPhone OS seem archaic. It almost feels like I'm cheating for two more capable phones, paying less a month than before.


I can't recommend the EVO enough. Everyday is like an adventure, and I find something new to play with. Customization on these things is out of this world. It's no longer a sea of square shaped apps, but a working OS that caters to MY needs, not Apple's. I've had 11 years worth of Mac computers and mobile devices, and while I love OSX and their desktops, I don't think now I could ever go back to iPhone OS. Do yourself a favor… upgrade by paying less. You won't regret it.

I agree with this comment. I web browsed, gamed, download, and more all day yesterday and was impressed how long it lasted. Naturally, with all the poor battery comments I've read, I thought it was terrible. In the end, it's not so bad after all. Phew! =]

Now the original TP had horrible battery life!

This guy speaks the truth. I didn't realize how fast 3G could be, to be honest with you, until I switched. And ironically, I was talking to a friend of mine tonight, who's phone got cut off. I was so used to it being me, I laughed when I realized it was his iPhone and not my EVO .

As far as Sense UI goes, I love it too. I think it's better than any Launcher alternative, but I would recommend you getting Beautiful Widgets. It will enable you to put in a different clock and weather icon that takes up less space and looks nicer. Here's an example of how my desktop looks currently.
