Today was an average day of use. I took the phone off the charger when I woke up at around 10am, then charged it for about 15 minutes while in the shower around 2pm. I was at work from 5-10:30pm. The rest of the day consisted of normal web browsing, facebook updates, heavy XM radio use, heavy texting, some speed tests, about 10 minutes of calling, and about 10 minutes games.

I suspect that app can only see items controlled by the OS. I doubt the power the radios use is part of those items. I've found being in a non-4G area while 4G is on drains the battery very, very quickly. I went through a non-4G area today and my battery fell from 93% to 68% in less than an hour. This is 100% unacceptable and shows a rush to market mentality that I'm not comfortable with and if is not resolved will result my returning this. I suspect a lot of people like me are waiting for the next firmware update to fix this, but Sprint will probably purposely do this after our 30 day is over.

There IS A PROBLEM HERE. Your limited testing and limited screenshots prove absolutely nothing. An anecdote is not data. So far it looks like there is a mystery drain happening to lots and lots of people. Sprint's engineers better be finding a fix to this because its ****ing annoying to have chargers everywhere because 4G power saving isn't at a sane level. Hell, it should just shut itself off if 4G is not available for more than 5 minutes than drain my battery almost 30% while scanning.

You know you can turn 4g off yourself right? phone in pocket 4g is off. phone in hand web surfing 4g is on. Why have in constantly looking for 4g when not even in your hands. took phone off charger at 9 today used to for nav and web surfing while out of town got back at 7 had 46% left. I can see your point that they should have made the phone turn off 4g but it's an easy fix with the widget.

Now if I can quit looking at my dead pixels!!!

i can agree with this. my screenshots dont prove much, only that i went all day without the battery dying. sure there are going to be many devices with defective batteries, and of course 4G isnt very efficient yet. but for me, my battery life has been great.

Sorry, but the idea that one would leave the 4g radio on in a non 4g area makes about as much sense as eating tomato soup with a fork. Just leaving 4g on during normal use doesn't make much sense. Seriously, leaving your phone on in general where there is no signal will greatly drain the battery. This is just common sense. The benefits of 4g for normal use aren't that great. And with the on/off widget, it's not too difficult to know when it's on oroff.

I think the device data session messed up. The screen shots in full bars. Most likely, it was in the bad state. Try to refresh your "Mobile network" again (set it OFF and then turn it on).

LOL. Wow are you serious? Maybe you don't know much about how phones work(or i'm misunderstanding your post) There is nothing to be "fixed" with what i perceive to be your issue except for the user. I'll try to explain it (cause i'm bad at explaining things )

The radio and the signal are two entirely different things that are independent of each other. by that i mean just because you have the radio on doesn't mean you will get a signal. (you already know that part, but some might not) When the radio comes on (whether it be 2g 3g or 4g) it searches for a signal. If there is no signal the radio keeps searching until either it finds one or until the radio is turned off. It has nothing to do with a "rush to market mentality" it's how radios work. Your 3g radio will do the same thing. stay in a place with a weak cell signal while trying to used your cell radio and see how long your battery lasts. Just turn the radio off. It's even in the manuals If you don't have a need for 4g at that moment turn the radio off.

Battery life is a ubiquitus complaint among EVO users and sudden drains like these are common. Denying this shows a level of fanboy stupidity I haven't seen outside of Apple users.

How one ****ing user's experience suddenly nullifies everyone's complaints is beyond me. There is a drain issue and honestly, I dont think its limited to 4G. I've gotten mystery drains when 4G is off. Not as bad, but it happens. I've since disabled the 'always on' setting in mobile networks. I'll see how that works out. In the menatime, stop your insipid "advice" on how there isnt a drain issue and how we just need to be extra/super dilligent about making sure its off all time time regardless of what we are doing. Seriously, we should all be a bit pissed at Sprint here, not giving out shit advice.

Dylan, awesome battery life.

For me, at 11:26pm

- 4g off (theres no 4g on Long Island yet)
- with live wallpaper (htc sense live wallpaper)
- wifi on all the time
- BT off
- auto adjust brightness off
- GPS off (but the clock widget still updates every hour)
- Stock battery
- Haptic feedback and keyboard vibration off

This is normal usage for me. A bunch of texts, a few calls, used navigation to find pizza, checked my mail and did some browsing while listening to music. 3g was on when I was not in a wifi area. As you can see, the battery life is awesome with normal usage.

Im not pointing fingers and Im gunna make a general statement. There are people out there who wanna rape the battery, and then complain that the battery life sucks. Its a fact of life, if you beat on something, its not gunna last long. If you beat on a car, it will break down faster than usual; if you beat on your body, things will deteriorate quicker; You dont need to baby the evo battery to get good battery life, just dont rape it

There are several circumstances that will lead a user to have poor battery life on a smartphone let alone and android phone and even more so on the EVO. But, blaming it on the manufacturers as if it is a defect is just stupid. If someone is having horrible battery life (unless they have a lemon phone or battery) either they don't know what they are doing, or they (as in your case) are just being stubborn. If you are having such horrible battery life i suggest either read up more on android, using your 4g radio as htc/sprint advises, or just getting rid of the phone.

Also the point we are trying to get to you is that it is unnecessary to have the 4g radio on if you aren't using it. there is a toggle widget and it takes 10 sec at the most to turn on/off

Well I can see both sides of this issue.

I never had any problems with my battery, but I am far from a typical user. I mainly use my Evo for other than phone calls, so it is frequently off unless I am surfing, getting GPS directions, geotagging, or something else. As a result I have not had any battery problems.

But I understand some peeps turn their phone on when they wake up and turn it off when they go to sleep. For some this may simply be out of habit, for others they need the ability to be connected constantly.

I do not consider my self a fanboy, just some one who does not have a battery problem due to the way I use my phone. If you use your phone in a different way and are unable or unwilling to switch some apps off the Evo in its current state may not be the right choice for you.

What also blows my mind is how 4G scanning continues even when you are using wifi. Why would you need it to scan if you're already on wifi?

Well, I've got a battery issue, but it seems that it is the battery and not the phone. I bought a replacement battery when I got my Evo. I first charged the red (original) battery, then the replacement and used the replacement for the first couple of days. I had at least 12 hours of routine use with plenty of power still left in the battery.

Since that time, I've "killed" a lot of apps that I don't need/want to conserve battery, so I should be drawing less power from the battery.

When I switched back to the red battery, my battery life quickly went to just four or five hours. I did do the thing where you check the CDMA/GSM radio and it was on GSM. I switched it to CDMA and still saw no improvement.

i.e. the culprit seems to be the battery and not the phone (at least in my case).

My best method of keeping battery alive:
Install and USE task killer everytime I open apps and put it back to sleep (its not as much a hassle as it sounds)

Turn off all connectivity that's not in use (gps, WiFi, 4g, bt)...widgets on homescreen makes it a cinch.

I've noticed that all my Android devices have horrible cell standby time. Mainly cuz there's a million things running in the background.

Most battery drainage problems are related to the Apps you downloaded from the Android Market. There are sh*t loads of app out there causing the battery drainage problem. If you use the default apps that come with the device, your battery will definitely last for a day with normal usage.
