Root On the edge

So... I have everything downloaded for doing the root... the rom, the recovery file, all that jazz... but I am hanging on the edge to whether or not I should do it. Afraid I'll brick the phone, and i'm worried once i have it, i really wont know what to do (more like keeping it up to date/maintenance)

I'm up for any advice to sway me one way or another. JFYI, I'm just looking for opinions. I'm not going to blame anyone for my decision LoL. I just want the full potential to my phone, while keeping it safe.

P.S. You don't have to send me links on how to do it, where to look for roms, etc etc. I've done my research her in the threads.

P.S.S. Is gridlocks All-in-on-script a good place to start??

All in one script is a great place to start.
I recommend you do it.
Even if you dont do much afterwards... just find a good rom and you are set.

I recommend Ivan's official 1.0, or Evil Eris...

No real danger of bricking phone. I've yet to hear one horror story here.
You wont regret it:D

FYI... i didn't really understand how great root was until after i rooted. sometimes you just have to take the plunge

I really liked the Sense UI, and I found that Sense-able was a really nice Rom that had all that I needed.

So far it has been very solid, and my battery life is amazing compared to 1.5, I generally get about 30-45 hours on a charge. not sure if this is because of the Rom, or because of something else.

Also, you can use Eris Master App to Root and update your phone without any fear of messing things up.

+1 -- I totally agree withe cableguynoe... Ivan's Official has been great for me. I waited (patiently, I guess) until the first day of the OTA, thinking that my window for rooting was closing. After I did, I was so stoked and I haven't regretted it since. Now, I've got a wi-fi hotspot, ability to download non-standard apps that aren't available to non-root. Didn't even realize that I was overclocking (lol!) until just last week since Ivanmm's Official ROM is set at a base of 710 MHz--never noticed a battery degradation and my phone has been awesomely responsive (btw, I've never cranked it up higher than 710 since I do value my battery life). One last thing: I rooted because I do plan on getting a new phone at some point in the future which I may not be able to root--but I'll always have my Eris to fall back on and it will have a wi-fi hotspot (and I'll have internet wherever I'm at).

FYI, Eris Master App is down / unavailable at the moment...was pulled last weekend. Check the thread at xda for status. Hopefully, it will be back up soon--its a great tool / option for people to have to root (and they are trying to make it non Eris-specific so it will work on a variety of Android devices).

What is the Eris Master App? I know you put the PM00IMG.Zip and the rom (I'll prob go with Ivan's)on the SD card and run Amons recovery image ... but what does Eris Master App do?

It is (was?) an app to simplify the process of rooting your Eris. It basically has four steps to root 1) download/copy base root ROM to your phone 2) flash the root ROM 3) install Amon-RA's recovery utility/partition 4) download / flash custom ROM using recovery utility. The app guided you through doing the various steps.

Steps 1 and 2 worked fine for me... Windows Vista (I believe) conflicted with EMA and I had to finish the root process manually. Lots of people used it without problems, though. Awesome idea and work by the xda developers, Eclips3 and Jamezelle. Monitor the xda website and their thread for more info and status.

ok but maybe a stupid question if you root doesnt that mean that you have to use the leaked version of the ota's

and what does that do your market?

and what about your warranty at verizon?

as you can see this is life changing decision for me because i love me eris and dont want to mess her up like my friends have done by rooting

I am not sure if anyone with a rooted phone has had a problem doing a warranty swap. I mean if the root is the actual cause of the problem, that's one thing.
But most likely you would have a problem regardless or root or no root.
If you walk in to verizon and show them the problem on your phone, i can't see them being actually checking it to see if it's been rooted....
But i could be wrong.

Personally, no problems with the market.

Root is great!:)

Woohoo! I am so excited for you !

I used this link http://androidforums.com/all-things-root-eris/53963-guide-stock-1-5-latest-root-2-1-a.html

THe all-in-one scrip made it super simple.

But before you do it...

Can someone please confirm if this will work from 2.1 OTA?

I was on 1.5 when I did it. I know this has beed discussed, but i cant remember right now.

Edit:
No roll back needed. The initial zip you used to actually root your phone will overwrite 2.1 as well as 1.5 (as long as its not a 2.1 leak)

Edit:

Rooting should work from 2.1 OTA just like 1.5 as long as your HBOOT is 1.47 (read this in many threads/posts)...thanks.

I did it! I took the plunge. I am now running Evil Eris (well, in a couple min).. the guide was easy.. took about an hour to do. We'll see how I like it. If I don't I can always go back to 1.5 --> OTA ... RIGHT???

First off, Congrats!!
Trust me you will enjoy yourself..
I was all for 1.5, hated 2.1, finally took the r00t dive, and I haven't been able to stay on one ROM since haha.
Yes you can always go back to 1.5 though.
At first I was all for the sense-based ROMs.. Try out vanilla!
IC3ROMv2.9 is great.
I run Ivans official ROM- basically stock 2.1 ROM with superuser and O/C.
DamageR is a great new ROM check that out
Aloysius ROMs are so stable and fast
White Widow is great, Dev is on google Wave be sure to watch for 3.0 coming out soon
Fresh 2.1.2 is expected really soon
tainted vanilla is good, stock browser doesnt work-its not just u lol
Pure Hero
Cyanogen
ZenEXP
XtrROM
all great man Enjoy!

Its all up and running EE 3.0. It scared me a bit, because it was just a black screen for about 4 min.... so I frantically started searching this site for the answer...... .... and then my phone worked. I haven't got into any tweeking yet, so I haven't really got to enjoy everything yet. BUT, I will.

The IRC chatroom.... what is the website for that? I can't ever seem to get to it unless I click on a link in a thread... you know, Just in case...
