Droid Power Button Broke...

i got a droid from my friend a few days ago, and the only real problem with it is that the power button does not work. I have been trying to root it but cant even get to the bootloader screen. What i do is i take out the battery then hold the up button on the dpad, then replace the battery. and all i get is a black screen, no text or anything. i can get to the android bootloader by holding x then volume up and camera button but not this bootloader. i have tried letting the battery run low, all that results in is the droid shutting off and not turning back on untill the battery reaches 30%. so basically all i want to know is is there a way to root a droid with a broken power button, and how do you go about doing that?

P.S. it is running stock 2.1 update1

Do you have the spare parts app on the phone? It is possible that the end button behavior is set incorrectly causing the power button to be unresponsive. When the phone is running, can you long press the power button to get the shutdown menu? If so, you just have a setting wrong in spare parts.

What I described happened to "someone I know." If the button is totally unresponsive, call motorola and get a warranty replacement.

They come with a one year warranty. It could only be out of warranty if you got it 5-6 months before it came out or have broken the warranty in some easily discernible way. I would try to take it in to a verizon store and get it switched out.

Well the thing is I really did get it from a friend. It's not activated yet and I have no paperwork on it. I don't know if they would take it. And the spare parts app didn't work. Power button still not working

Mine just did this. If it were activated you could just call vzw and get free overnight shipping on a replacement.

Or take it in to any verizon corporate store. I have done both.

I tried that but no store in a 60 mile radius has any in stock.

im pretty sure returning it is out of the question. i didnt pay for it, have no papers, box or anything, its not even activated. all im trying to do is root it, then i may activate it.

i just dont see how that would work. if it where so easy then everyone would do it. i dont think that big red would be so easily fooled

The Droid should automatically turn on when connected to a power source.

Call Motorola and talk to them. They should replace it as long there is no "visible" damage.
