Data free GPS app?

Hi,

I'm new the the android world with my eris. I was wondering if there was an app that uses the Eris's GPS chip without using any data. Is there an app like that? I could find anything close to it.. I know for the Omnia (Windows Mobile phone) there's an app like that, but is there one for the Eris?

I think this is what your looking for.

Mobile Atlas Creator (Mobile Atlas Creator) is an dinky wee program that allows the user to download and save a portion of the world as a map. This map is copied from your prefered available online map (Google Map, Multimap, OpenStreetMap etc) and can then be used in the GPS app of your choice that can read these, compatible apps are listed on the homepage of Mobile Atlas Creator.

Thats the way I understand it although I've yet to try it, it's on my to-do list.

CoPilot live uses offline maps so it doesn't have to download on the fly like Google maps.

check out mapdroyd, it will let you download specific maps (I was able to download just the california map) from the open street map project and will show your location with gps.

CoPilot, Navigon & iGo MyWay all have the maps stored on your SD card so no internet is required to use them.. I promise you. I been using using all 3 of these apps for months with no data charges. Don't... I repeat don't use Google Navigation if you don't have a data plan. You will regret it and if you lose your signal you will be lost someplace, but it is free if that's any consolation. You can also try Ndrive & Sygic but I don't recommend them because they have issues with GPS locks, routing and various other things.

I found this nice article describing several offline navigation solutions with Android: Android Sat Nav Apps.

Personally, I have tried google navigation (requires datalink, thus it won't be any good for you), Navigon, Sygic and CoPilot. Sygic just is too slow on my Hero. CoPilot wasn't very stable and lags a bit in the turn-announcements (opposite to google nav that often is too early). I like navigon best, but I'm not sure if it is ready for use in the USA now.

Other things I've tried include rmaps, which won't do turn-by-turn but shows maps that can be downloaded before you leave home. Further more, I tried OpenSatNav. It uses openstreetmaps, but requires a data connection too IIRC. It doesn't do voice guidance either.

Your question may be broader than just navigation or mapping. If so, there are lots of other applications that use GPS but do not provide navigation. "GPS Test" shows your GPS decoder output, dailyroads voyager springs to mind, so does footprint, all kind of weather apps etc. etc. Anything specific you are looking for?

Yes.. it's better than a standalone GPS unit as I can make calls. Seriously though.. I have been using all three of my GPS apps with no problems. The only issue I have is that CoPilot doesn't switch maps automatically when travelling between countries (I live in Germany). Other than that, Navigon & iGo MyWay are top notch GPS apps.. the only downside is it's not free.

Yea, I don't need the voice directions. Just something simple for long trips. I don't really mind downloading the maps before I leave on the trip too. Which one is the most complete for the US? (California mostly..)

Do you mean no data from wifi nor 3g ever, or just when out driving?

I'm going to assume he means no data from either while out of any wifi coverage area.

Also, I have a quick question, which one of the GPS apps can support voice turn by turn directions online? There were so many up there I can't seem to read one that supported it.. Or I just fail at reading...

I would think so, but then his question is the same as the OP, and the answers above should apply to him to.

Did you really mean online? Google Nav does turn by turn voice online. Copilot does turn by turn voice offline. There were also others for offline, but I don't know for sure which ones do turn by turn.

Hello....new to the Android system...one thing I was wondering is if I dowloaded CoPilot on my Htc Desire HD would there be any way to share it with my wifes phone or the same make...say a way to download the app to my computer and the upload the app to both my phones?

As far as I know, all GPS apps use the data plan. Although for some reason, I used PhoneTag for a month and didn't see too much difference in my phone bill.

Can anyone recommend an app for the galaxy s2 that provides offline navigation using garmin GPS based maps? I have a pile of unlocked maps that work in a garmin GPS and I 'd to continue using them in the S2 without a data connection.

I'd like turn-by-turn navigation, voice directions, points of interest (POI) search, full search of a map, save favourites, routing by car or pedestrian; shortest/fastest route selection, auto re-rerouting, detours, select roads: avoid toll roads, secondary roads, etc. All of the features and functionality of a great GPS.

Incorrect. Read this thread again. Nav apps that use locally stored maps are mentioned. Some nav apps require data. Some do not.

Most apps use their own map data.

Yes, I realize this is an old thread - but I've been using the NavFree app on my wife's Transformer (and shortly my SGS2) and it's awesome. NavFree - https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.navfree.android.OSM.ALL&hl=en - and there is a separate US version as well.

Absolutely no data usage once it's downloaded and installed. Turn by turn voice navigation too. Does a good job at re-plotting should you take a wrong turn, or just ignore it for a while to see if you get lost. If it has a fault, it would be that the interface isn't fabulous. A bit clunky to figure out at first. But once you get the hang of it, it's easy. I set all my travel points as favourites when I have a wifi connection, then it's just a few taps to get a route plotted from wherever you are. Has options for fastest/easiest/shortest route, etc too.

Uses OpenStreetMap for map data if I recall correctly. I was ready to shell out 60 or 80 bucks for a Garmin app until I found NavFree. (Was ready to drop about $140 for a standalone unit until I clued in that my wife's Transformer has GPS in it!) Just be warned, that it WILL chew up a fair bit of memory on installation, because it downloads all the maps to your device. I think my maps (for Canada) ate about 450MB. Great app. Needs some UI improvements, but great nonetheless.

I would recommend to check app. Locus. It’s very flexible with tons of tools and options. You can preload dozens of different map formats and use them off line.
