Help Anyone return an Evo because the bottom screen is separating

Well me EVO is on its way. So i dont know if mine will have this issue or not at this point.

However, what is the worst this can realistically do? Are we talking about the screen lifting the tiniest amount and maybe getting some dust in their? Or has someone had a screen that just fell right off? Does this movement of the screen change the touch sensitivity or performance of the phone in any way? I am not arguing i am really asking. I am trying to figure out if this is something that will cause product failure down the road. If dust is the biggest fear wouldnt a case like innocase or body glove keep the dust out? Also cant we just have our phones fixed in like 6 months if we have dust because of this? Sure we shouldnt have to and no one wants to. But dont we have that option. Also doesnt the evo plan make us all eligible for an upgrade in a year? I dont know if i could ever be happy keeping a phone for 2 years anyway.

Thanks guys. This issue does suck for those with rising screens. Who knows in 2 days i may be in that group also.

For me the issue is the possible dust intrusion, and the fact that I feel that I bought a subpar phone.
I just don't like spending my money and finding out it has issue as soon as I take it out of the box.
I do believe the best case for dust issues would be some kind of gel type case, as far as the other concerns, only time will tell.
I sure as shit hope the screen does not fall out:eek:

so I bought my phone for full price, 1st person in line on the 4th, payed about 475 with tax, (sold my hero previously for 250 so not too bad), so i have obvious light leakage, and screen raising issues, can I just go back to any sprint corporate store (i was on vacation when it came out so I purchased it in Las vegas, I live in San diego), and exchange it for a brand new evo? i dont want a refurbished one, i want a new phone, brand new, what do you think?

I know when I first took my phone back to RS, they basically told I was SOL because, A: They have no phone, and B: I would have to pay another 50 dollar deposit, so I would assume you could go back to a corporate store, or even just call up sprint.
I do hope you get taken care of.

Just posted over at the HTC forums. Could you also post the email address that you sent this to as well.
Thanks

I dont have a clear cut email. I just got an email form on their website heres the link.

HTC Mobile Phones - Customer Service - E-mail Support

By the way for all you facebook freaks. The sprint official facebook page has over 230,000 fans or members. I highly suggest we also vent there, that way the general public is made aware. The more people that know about it will force HTC to formally acknowledge their problem and deal with it accordingly. We need to stand up and demand better quality from HTC.:(:mad::mad::thinking::(:eek::eek:

IT can and it will hinder the performance of the capacative touch. I have heard reports of the screen popping out almost completley. Here is a video that Roman posted to youtube. Watch it till the very end.

I wonder why nothing like this happened to the Inc considering the proximity? Thank god.

HTC has a lot of damage control. Shame shame. Good luck guys.

I suggest that the reason is they updated the touch sensor substrate from the HD2 (it was not that good) and along with additional surface size, the adhesive used to seal to the bezel may have worked for the HD2, but not the EVO with the revised layers.

Display (sensors) was also updated for the Inc and Desire, but along with the Nexus, FAR more production volume and chances to remove build bugs. Not to mention they have smaller surface sizes than the EVO.

added:

Watch out using this device in very hot and humid climates. Based on the issue and apparent high sample of units with this issue, this could be a long summer of discontent for the first builds of EVO. Forget about going to the beach with this puppy, unless you are dead sure you have no seal/display issues.

This has me really concerned now, as I have the light leakage issue. I wasn't going to return the phone simply because of it, but in the last few days, I have found an area on the bottom of my screen that does not register input AT ALL. There is a dead zone "stripe" across the bottom of the screen, but above the 4 control buttons.

It is most noticeable on the keyboard when the navigation arrows are at the bottom. I cannot get any of them to register input, no matter where I try to hit them. I am going to call Sprint tomorrow and see what they can do. Is it possible my screen separation is causing this?

Sounds like circuitry failure underneath the digitizer, but I suppose the screen separation could be the culprit.

I have no light leakage at all...but looking very closely, I can tell that my glass is just barely above the bezel (like 0.5mm) and it definitely has some give in it. If I press slightly on the bottom left corner, by home key activates. I can actually see and feel that I can deflect the bottom edge of the screen below the bezel with very light pressure.

What bothers me about this isn't that it's leaking light now or has gotten as bad as Roman's has...right now, I have zero light leakage. It's that the adhesive is not getting the job done and will fail over the longer term (like 6 months from now). The adhesive seems to consistently be inadequate on the bottom edge of the screen. I fear that in the long term, this problem will affect more and more phones.

i bought it at a sprint corporate store, if im going back to a different sprint corporate store do you think they will require receipt and the box with all accessories? do you think they will try and give me a refurb? what should I say if they do? i want a new one, show me you taking it out of the box? when i bought it she mentioned there was a restocking fee, will this apply if im exchanging for the same phone?

Only in the first 30 days. After 30 days they send your phone in and you will never see it again. What a mess that system is. I asked a mobile manager friend about it and he said BB just doesn't have enough market share to push (enter cell company here) to get the phones back faster.

Example: My palm pre volume button wasn't working so i brought it in even though it was still covered under sprint. I thought they would just swap it out but nope. They mailed it into palm and 30 days of "waiting for parts" later I still didn't have a phone. The only reason I was happy in the end is because I got lucky. If they have your phone for more then 30 days they credit you back the full price of the phone you can use either for a new phone of the same model or any other phone. My 30 days happen to come up last tuesday and I showed up friday morning and snagged myself an EVO. In the end I got an evo for a clean $85 without having to wait another 18mo for an upgrade (which is why I'm on the BB program for the evo too). My gf however had a broken power button on her pre and brought it to sprint, the tech took off the cover, fixed the power button, and handed it back in 10 min.

So do you recommend getting the Best Buy extended warranty or the Sprint TEP?

Best Buy's plan is monthly, $10, or you can pay in full for 24 months and I think that is $170.

All I can say is the more reports I see, the more pissed I get at HTC for letting something like this escape test units. seriously, are you kidding me?

New issue, my home button has started to not vibrate on some touches. and its the side that is actually starting to show more and more separation with more days of use of the phone. It looks like the honeymoon is very close to ending with the EVO. And I'm really pissed, because this happens to be a phone that has an extremely large amount of potential to keep me happy for a long time, if only the build quality was where it should be.

Honestly; for a flagship device, you'd think HTC would be on top of this phone in terms of build quality. The only way I could feel worse about the build quality with some of these Evos is if they were made by Samsung.

Yeah, that looks like a pretty significant issue. You've got a year of manufacturer's warranty, so you COULD wait until more of the recent batches of Evos begin circulating before having it replaced. After all, it can only go downhill from your current situation.

Everyone that is having this issue needs to contact HTC about it so they fix it. The more reports they get the more that they'll realize its a wide spread problem. Here is the number to contact HTC 425-679-5318. Make sure to ask them to what they plan to do about it cause if something does not happen in the near future, everyone should then start filling complaints with the BBB

Yes, I am returning mine tomorrow for the separating screen at the bottom. For me this was the final straw. The light leakage has gotten worse since I got the phone. Also, I don't like the weak wi-fi antenna and the fact I can't get 4G even though I live in a 4G city. 4G is too spotty and I'm thinking it may have to do with a weak phone antenna. Not sure. For now, I'm going to return my phone and wait on the sideline to see how these issues are addressed by HTC and Sprint.

I find it interesting how the digitizer is installed. They use the strong double faced tape everywhere, top and sides except for the bottom where they use that kind of glue but its not really glue either like sticky gum. I'm guessing this is done for a good reason maybe they make the bottom a weak point so they can more easily pry a broken digitizer off if and when it ever needs replacement. If you ever tried to remove that 3m double faced tape once it cures its very hard to break loose this would give the service people a point to start to lift the digitizer up and make it easier to get a knife up in there to cut the tape. Even with the bottom a little loose the digitizer is not going to come off with all that other double faced tape around the rest of it.

If you take it back to the same store they probably wont make you bring everything in but if your going to a different store, you might have to. Best thing to do is call the store before going. Also there is no restocking fee for exchanging it for the same phone model. If you switch to a different phone then you will be charged $35.

You guys are really surprised? Have you heard of HTC? Have you heard how the Nexus One can't maintain a 3G signal? How about the horrid voice quality, battery drain, and weak reception on the Incredible?

I am saddened and disappointed, yes, but not surprised.

I'm with you. They make nice looking phones only if they could work on their quality.
