Root Once we all update to the "official" Froyo - Will we have to root the phone again?

I'm new to android. Learned how to root my phone, and I'm happy with the new functionality.

When Android 2.2 is released officially, and I install it OTA - or however they update the OS during a big release - will I need to root my phone again? Or will the root image just be "overlaid" with 2.2.

Hopefully we'll find out soon when they release 2.2.

1. Before that happens, you could just root and flash your way to getting the "already edited" Froyo, so there will not be any need to update via OTA.

2. Once it's out, it might OR might not remove the root. Most likely it will (because I don't see how the previous root/rom would stick) but probably yes.

I plan on doing option 1. Just waiting for them to sort out the bugs and such in Froyo before installing it.

NEVER, NEVER update using the official release. There will either be a) a leaked version of it before release that the devs use to make custom ROMs or b) there will be a flood of custom ROMs based off it just after release. Potentially losing root forever isn't worth getting a ROM 2 days early.

If current development is any indication Froyo will be available on the Evo well before it's officially released for the phone.

At last check the only real nuts to crack are 4G and the fact that the Evo has 2 cameras

Absolutely! The latest Sprint release almost always patches the previous exploit used to gain root, and that means we would have to look for a new one (if it even exists!) in order to get it back.

And there is no way to simply roll back the update and install an old version which allows root?

Just don't use the official updater and you will be fine. Basically, anyone can pull the rom package out of the Sprint installer. Once that's pulled out, it's easy to plug that into a kitchen and root the ROM itself. Then you just flash it like any other custom ROM currently available.

That's what I did with the ROM I am running. Of course, you don't have to do any of this as the many chefs will do it for you. You just need to be rooted via Toast's method and NEVER run the official Sprint updater. That way you will keep your root.

When 2.2 comes out, I update using the official version. This, from what I understand, means that I will never be able to root my phone again. Right? But I CAN use the Unrevoked (or whatever that app is called) to allow me to install root applications.

Is my logic correct there?

No. UnrEVOked relies on an exploit in Sense that will most likely be patched very quickly. The group behind unrEVOked has already informed HTC of the vulnerability, it was already patched in the Hero's latest OTA. Until the EVO starts shipping with a different OS, I wouldn't count on devs taking their valuable time to try and root a build that you shouldn't have updated to in the first place. Like I said, just don't update with official releases. It isn't smart.
