Root [TUTORIAL] IDIOT-PROOF Root Guide!

I have a couple questions in regards to this method.

Is the Clockworkmod ROM Manager section doing the exact same thing as the using the evo-recovery.zip method (for recovery)? Just one is more automatic while the other requires ab shells?

I only found a free version of the titanium backup - does the dev still have the paid version?

I know that Flips Fresh ROM is putting all the bloatware onto the SD card; will the titanium backup end up putting all the bloatware back onto the phone's internal memory?

Thanks! Great tut!!

ClockworkMod Recovery allows you to flash ROMs directly from your EVO without having to be connected to your PC. Toast's custom recovery requires that you be connected to your PC and use adb, but it is the only way to write to /system. However, you shouldn't need to write to /system unless there is something very specific that you want to do since most custom ROMs are already optimized.

In order to get the donate version of Titanium Backup, you must donate a few bucks to the dev, and he will send you a license key that activates all of the donate features. The full instructions are in the app once you download it.

Fresh ROM puts the apps in a separate folder on the SD card. They aren't installed, so Titanium Backup won't touch them. You can use a file explorer like EStrong or ASTRO to individually restore any features that you would like.

I just unzipped it on my desktop and it worked fine. I would upload it for you but I'm in a hotel and have terrible connection.

Also, you said you are getting a clean unrooted evo after reboot, which sounds like my problem I had this morning and I had to download the radio update and run it like you do the rom files. I applied both the radio update and the rom at the same time and all seems to be working now.

Very interesting. I would appreciate it if (at a later time) you could post it somewhere where I can grab it. I finally got it working (with my "possibly corrupt" file but used Toastch's PC method. What I found was this:

When I used the file downloaded from the link, it SEEMS I was able to load the image but the resulting system was not rooted (I tried loading Titanium Backup and it said "not rooted") HOWEVER when I continued the process using adb I was able to load the recovery file and then load ROMS and now I am up and running. I am wondering if that PCIMG36.ZIP actually roots the EVO despite what the instructions say. The whole thing is quite strange. In the end I found the ADB method much simpler (maybe because I am a DOS person from way back). Now that it's rooted I can use ROM MANAGER and it's all brainlesss and painless just as it was on my MyTouch3G. :)

Maybe they fixed that file. I am going to try and download it yet again. :)

Thanks,
Ed

For anyone listening here ... it's quite easy to remove "bloat files" directly from the ROM images you download. For example, I installed the "Bugfree" ROM and simply opened up the zip file I downloaded, went into the \system\app folder in the ZIP and removed all the crap I didn't want then loaded the ROM via Rom Manager and was good as gold. Real easy process if you do it BEFORE loading your ROM. A lot easier than doing it through adb or that tiny terminal app. Just make sure you also remove the matching APK/ODEX files.

i need help!! i did this and have been sucessful up until step 32-33 when i go to the reboot screen and i have to do the -reboot system now
-apply sdcard: update.zip
-wipe data/factory reset
-wipe cache partition
-install zip from sdcard

-nandroid
-partitions menu
-advanced
- *****Go Back*****
i only have down to the wipe cache option nothing else...and i run the apply sdcard: update.zip and i get nothing just a abort fail message stating there is no such file or directory????

Same thing happened to me and isn't working. Should I try the Fresh ROM instead? This is my first time dealing with rooting and kind of nervous lol. Also if I do go with Fresh do I delete anything from the stuff I downloaded on the first page?

Thanks man, huge help!

Again, awesome thread!

I'd actually have to do an adb guide first because it is required for that. I'm on vacation until Sunday, but I will definitely give it a shot next we

I'd like to see an adb guide. Is there somewhere that explains it? Now that full root is out I want to get to it. I'm currently rooted via unrevoked.

There is an adb basics guide on xda, but it is pretty brief.

Hey wait, when do you install the radio update thingy? I never saw that step in the Tut.

The file in question is: evo.1.39.00.05.31.zip

What was I suppose to do with this one? I think I missed something.

Update... Just saw this:

What is with people just saying "it works" "got it to work" tell us what you did to solve the problem or you aren't helping anyone and your posts are pointless.

I followed all the steps, and I've repeated steps 30-34 three times now, I downloaded the fresh evo rom and when I select that on my sdcard I somehow end up with stock rom on my phone again.

Any idea's what I'm missing or messing up?

Edit: I got it, it was the radio update. Make sure to download and install the Radio Baseband 1.39.00.05.31.

Where was this step? I don't see anything about the radio update in the tut... Can someone help me? I just put the clockwork mod thingy on the SD card as update.zip, I'm holding off til someone can fill in the missing steps I think I over locked.

Thanks.

Yet another update.. I found this:

http://geekfor.me/faq/flash-a-radio-update-sprint-evo-4g/

Do I want to do this BEFORE I flash Fresh .02? I was just to the point where I flash fresh. So far all I've done is root with PC36IMG.zip, install ROM Manager and the clockworkmod thingy.

I just renamed the clockwork zip to update.zip and copied it to the SD but I want to know about the radio update before I continue. Please someone respond, I'm sitting here doing this now and I don't want to mess up! :D

I'd also like to see a 'noob guide' for part 2. I feel pretty comfortable now but being as this is my first root I want to make sure all goes as it should. Thanks for you work on part 1 btw!! It is very much appreciated.

I would call that Step 33.5, After you Wipe Data and Wipe Cache, select Install from SDCard but before you choose your new ROM, choose that radio .zip file you mentioned. Then you go back to the menu where it says "reboot system, apply update, wipe data, wipe cache etc..." go back to "Install from SDCard" and choose your ROM. That is exactly what I did to get mine to work.

The Biles,
Great tutorial, helped me out a lot as an Android newbie. Followed all your steps and am currently running Fresh rom. My only problem so far is the phone not reading my SD card. I swapped out the card to another device and it reads fine. Swapped in my old 2g sd to EVO and that seems to read fine. Any thoughts or advice? Thanks again.
