Root ESPN3 blocking Verizon Wireless? :(

I'm running the leaked 2.2 with flash installed. I was hoping to be able to watch world cup games on ESPN3.com when not at home. It appears to work just fine when on WiFi but if I try to use my 3G connection the website says the ISP is not supported :( Does anyone else encounter this problem?

A Spain vs Poland friendly match is on right now.

It's probably something to do with distribution rights contracts. It always is. Same deal with Hulu. With the rate at which smart phones are progressing they really need to change the way these contracts work.

I wonder if that workaround to get Hulu working would work with ESPN3. Well, probably not. It doesnt show it blocked with Hulu does it? (I havent tried it, just know I read there was a workaround for it)

There was a workaround for Hulu but they've fixed that now too. No Hulu for us.

The problem with ESPN3 is totally different though. It looks like it will only stream to certain ISPs, Verizon Wireless not being one of them. There's a huge list of ISPs that it streams to, but I'm assuming they won't stream over cell data networks or something.

Hello,

I'm sorry to hear you are not able to access ESPN3.com.

At this time, ESPN3 is not available on wireless cards supported by Verizon Wireless, AT&T Wireless or any other mobile service provider. You must be a residential internet subscriber with AT&T or Verizon to have access to ESPN3. I apologize for any confusion.

For live assistance with this or any other issue, please call Customer Care at 1-888-549-3776 (ESPN) between 8:00 a.m. and 1:00 a.m. EST.

Regards,

Nic

I'm not sure exactly what he means by having to have Verizon or AT&T because my internet is through Cox Communications.

I was about to say something like that... I'm thinking he meant Cox or AT&T, the way I understand ESPN 3 (formerly ESPN 360) it is meant as an incentive that ISPs can offer to subscribers as a reason to sign up... It would cost the ISP money to offer however they do not charge the end user. So unless you have the ISP that offers it you can't have it. By keeping it exclusive the ISPs have an incentive for you to sign up with them...

I think it means, for us to access it on mobile, through Verizon 3G, we also have to have an account through Verizon through regular internet service. I myself have Suddenlink. When you hit connect with Verizon on the Droid, it asks for a Verizon login. I am assuming that login for regular internet would allow us to verify we have their service for ESPN3.

No he was saying that it isn't available on any mobile provider... It is however available on more then just Verizon or AT&T internet... I too have Cox and I have the ability to view it... (just not on my phone using 3G)

Weird because it is working fine on mine. I'm using dolphin HD. I don't know if that makes a difference.

You are using 3G and not wifi?
Yeah, was on 3g..
But I don't understand why I could and no one else could. Have you tried skyfire?
Another idea is type about:debug, then go into settings in browser choose UAString and change to desktop. Or download xscope or dolphin browser and change their settings to desktop, that should bypass their no mobile viewing. But the reason I could watch earlier is cause I already had my dolphin browser set to desktop.

Does anyone know where else we could watch World Cup games live with our Droid's 3G connection?

Have you tried Justin TV...I believe they will have the games. You may have to try a few different streams until you find a good one though...I've watched some stuff on there and it has been mostly great. Clear and in sync, but a few things where quite choppy...Gotta Love Flash...F U Steve!!!

Well, this discovery was disappointing.

Artificial limitation's suck. What is the point of Flash on Android if sites like ESPN3 and Hulu are going to be blocked?

This screams like something the FCC should be looking into. I have access to the internet so there should be zero reason why they block me.

I'm not going to even hope for an ESPN3 viewer since they're practically owned by Disney which has close ties to Apple through Stevie boy.
soulssports.net
or
livevss.tv

both have worked on my droid 2.2 w/ flash
These sites work.
