Help How do I sync contacts with GMail?

I'm currently trying to back up my contacts for when (if) we ever get root. And for some reason, even after I sync and all that fun stuff, the phone contacts don't update when I go to my GMail account. How in the world do I get them to update there?

When you made the contacts, you had to select "Google" as their type instead of "Phone".

To back them up, you can use the VZ backup sync, HTC Sync to a PC, or a 3rd party app

1. so does this mean you can't change the type once the contact is created?
2. i had my contacts ported from my 755p to my evo at sprint store. does that mean i have to erase all my contacts and redo the list? if so, can i upload my contacts from entourage into gmail and then sync?

Can anyone answer this? I've been with VZW forever and have always had my contacts ported to whatever new phone I purchased. Am I right that now in order for me to sync with gmail i have to re-enter them all in as google contacts?

No, once created you cannot change their type. You can however use a 3rd party app to export them as a csv file, which can then be imported to various places (outlook, google, etc)

Well here's what I did, and it worked.

Signed on to backupassistant and dowloaded .CSV file of all my contacts.

Imported CSV file into gmail, and then synced.

[Make sure you go into People, Menu, view, and check Google]

Now I had 2 of every contact showing. You have 2 options at this point, as I see it:

(1) People; Menu; View; Check Google; Uncheck Phone, or

(2) Delete all of your contacts on Backup Assistant (leaving only your Google contacts and no duplicates -- just remember to save that csv file just in case).

Anyway, it worked and wasn't too painful.
