I can update my phone any time I want. However, I'm waiting to update until we stop getting a newer better phone every month. I said awhile ago that after the iphone comes out there will be a couple more phones, and then things will slow down. That's what I'm waiting for. I figure by the end of this year there will be one more awesome phone, and then things will slow down. It's looking like that phone will be the super motorola phone there's been rumors about.

They wont be getting 2.2 before the Droid unless they come with it because they have a form of motoblur on them. You can install 2.2 on a rooted Droid right now as well.

If u look at the screenshots, it is clearly running froyo. I am as well available for an upgrade but probably won't unless a phone blows me away and leaves me with the wow feeling. But as of now, I'm still happy with my Droid.

It's a little bit frustrating that every month or two a better android phone comes out.!

Why is it frustrating? I don't understand this thinking at all. I read it in post all the time. You should buy a phone because it fits your needs not because it is the "best". I got the Droid at launch because I was stuck on a crappy winmo phone. Now the Incredible, EVO and other have come out with higher specs but why would that effect me? My Droid does what I want and more. Just seems really silly. Unless of course you are one of those people who go out and buy the latest greatest just to show off to everyone, in which case you are just a douche.

/rant

Now I am not trying to pick on you specifically but I do see this comment a lot and its just getting annoying. Also, if it does bug you just root your phone and put froyo on it. That's what I did and love it. Fast a hell.

I have no reason to believe that they will stop supporting the droid, and I think all the new phones are a great thing. If they only came out with a phone every two years then the growth of technology would be pretty slow. It would suck to buy a droid and then in two years the technology had only advanced to the point of the droid 2. I support them working hard to pump out better and better technology. Every time they come out with something better, it means the successor will be even better than that. So, while the droid 2 and the droid x might be really cool phones, ours is still great, and when it comes time to get a new one, they will be far better than what they are showing off now. So I say, Bring it on! Lets see better and better, and faster and faster! I'm due a new phone June 2011. I can't imagine where things will be at that time. Until then, I certainly don't feel like I got ripped off. THE DROID ROCKS, and it gets better every day.

"We confirmed that the Droid X was running Android 2.1 with some new sort of Motoblur (perhaps Ninjablur) skin."

Exclusive: Motorola Droid X preview -- Engadget

Considering this was an already packaged VZW branded box, and that the phone releases likely this month or early next, I doubt that its going to magically get froyo.

Talk about someone left in the dust - my son has a Droid Eris and they have just fallen off the face of the planet! I was able to hack Eclair onto his phone, but he'll likely never see Froyo. Droid Eris was pretty, but a flash in the pan.

According to PC World, the Motorola Droid remains Verizon's #2 phone, even after 8 months on the market! Left in the dust? I think not. There is simply no device quite like it.

Another one of these threads?

No, I don't think Droid will be left behind. The coming releases of Android (FroYo/Gingerbread) are supposed to take baby steps in avoiding this situation. It seems like Google's intention is for every single Android device to be updated to the latest OS version. However, as in the case of Samsung, the hardware manufacturers are screwing it all up.

Even if Droid does get left behind, chances are the warranty is up and it's time to root. Cyanogen has compiled a 2.1 ROM for the G1/MyTouch/Dream/Sapphire. There should be no worry about not getting the latest updates.

I feel like the droid 2 is going to get the 2.2 froyo update before the original droid does
Based on what information? Links? Or is this all gut feeling?

anyone feel the same way?
Not really. If you're worried then check out the rooting/modding info.

The Droid certainly isn't the new kid on the block anymore but it's going to be a while before it's "left in the dust".

It's nothing unique to Android. All smartphones and, for that matter, all tech is like this.

I think this mentality is in part consumers wanting some sort of security that they're buying the latest and greatest and that it will remain so. However, that just doesn't happen in the tech world these days. It's also part "keeping up with the Joneses" and brand loyalty/pissing contest. People probably would be better off if they only bothered to consider whether their device works for them rather than if it's the absolute latest and greatest at any given point in time.

If you're upgrading with carrier subsidies (probably on a roughly 2 year cycle) then your smartphone is going to spend quite a bit of time being old tech. Get used to it or be prepared to pay unsubsidized prices if it really bothers you. A device is truly obsolete when it no longer meets your needs -- not when product marketing tells you so.

I agree with you. The droid is my first smartphone, and I really didn't realize the extreme pace that these phones get updated. I think all the android handsets are coming out a little faster than most smartphones today, but that might all change with Windows Phone 7, or the next hp-palm thing, or who knows. I waited forever for a decent smartphone on verizon, got the best one the day it came out, and within a couple months was outshined by the nexus 1, then the incredible, then the evo, now the droid X, and it hasn't been a year. Some part of me thought this phone would have more longevity than that. I didn't mean to cause a rant and get insulted, just saying.

All that said, I really do like the droid. It does have some lag issues, and hardware issues, but I use it all the time. I listen to it in the car, and when I'm mowing the lawn. I GPS my workouts. It plays audio all night when I'm in bed. I take geotagged pictures with it (something high-end cameras still aren't doing very much). You could go on and on... it's an awesome phone, and it's not obsolete because it still meets and exceeds my needs. I'm still finding fun things to do with it.

Actually, when I researched this (and other) phones (I wasn't leaving VZW, b/c they provide the best reception where I was going to college and am working, not to mention the college employees get a 25% discount on all accessories and 20% on the contract prices) I found a lot of VZW reps (especially over the phone) were allowing NE2 to be used when you were 18 months into your contract, and *some* people on here were claiming that they were able to use them in as little as 11 months...

I was right at my 2 year (23 months 13 days) juncture, so I got a few weeks in but nothing spectacular.

Just thought you'd like to know - and so will all these other folks.

If you really *can* talk them into allowing NE2 upgrades in 11 months, then all of us early adopters will be eligible just before Christmas <evil grin>

I like the look of the Droid X, but I don't know if I can do without a keyboard yet. Too often I am typing quickly and need to crank out the physical qwerty to get the message done faster. I guess I'm just not coordinated yet on the virtual keys.

I'm also rooted, and love all the options I have on Droid. Until the Droid X has been around a bit and gets some root support (get rid of blur, put 2.2 on there), I won't consider switching.
