Help Desire Alarm Clock

Hi - I use my phone to wake me up in the mornings (in theory!) but I set the alarm for the first time last night and it didn't go off. This is no doubt because I have the phone fully switched off at night!!

Is there any way round this or an app to download? The alarm on my old Nokia worked even when the phone was switched off.

Most phones' alarms will sound if off. Not this one. Look at why you need the phone off... battery? Plug it in. Don't want calls? Silent mode. Only work around I can think of.

Also I and a few others dislike the android alarm. It's not hugely reliable when it comes to snooze. Everyone has their own recomendations. For me its "shake n not stired' shake to snooze. Works well. Paid but cheap

Thank you - that's a good tip. I haven't actually paid for any apps yet but I reckon I can stretch to 72p so I'll give it a go!

I use Klock too, set the snooze to 1minute just in case

This bugged me as well until I realised you don't need to turn your phone off - just put it in airplane mode. It will only use 0-1% battery overnight, so as good as being off.

I was annoyed by this problem, as I have been using my phone as my alarm clock since forever... I turn it off during the night because

- power saving / battery saving
- no electrical app. should be running constantly... In my experience they last longer this way.


I wrote HTC about this, and got the following answer:

Thank you for your enquiry regarding alarm.

The alarm will not sound on the phone if it is turned off. This is not an error but a feature on all HTC phones.

So there... No fix coming in the foreseeable future, I reckon

Got to say I find it bizarre that people are saying they expect the alarm to ring if the phone is switched off. If it's switched off it's switched off - simple! When you switch your kettle off do you still expect it to boil?

When I was on holiday recently I used my Desire as an alarm clock and just put it into airplane mode each night before I went to sleep and every day it sounded perfectly. The only time I've had a problem is when I've set it and not checked the days on which it is due to sound.

Could it be that people who are having problems are using a task killer which is killing the clock?

I have no task killer or anything. This is simply a matter of expecting a "normal" feature that is no longer there...

I will continue to switch off my phone at night, thank you very much. And I have invested in an old-school alarm clock that will look handsome next to my state of the art "smart" phone.

That's not exactly accurate. I've owned cell phones since the inception of the devices including the Motorola brick. Guess what, it didn't have an alarm clock - it barely worked as a phone! Since that time, I've owned numerous cell phones and only about half of them had alarms that would sound when the phone was off.

And today with smartphones, they're not so simple. A lot of smartphones need to have the operating system running, just like a computer, in order for it to process the software program which is the alarm clock. If the smartphone is not powered up, it can't run the alarm app and therefore can not sound the alarm.

And a prime example is the iPhone, the most successful phone on the planet. It does NOT sound the alarm if the phone is off, and if the most successful phone doesn't do it, then you can't claim it's a universal and normal feature that all phones have.

I find it very hard to understand that HTC expects you to have the phone turned on at all times, considering the energy consumption (and yes, I understand fly-mode takes up less power).

HTC isn't the only company that makes phones this way. C'mon, it's a smartphone, not just a simple cell phone and they're designed to be on and running 24/7. I leave my phone on all the time because I like to get up in the morning and check my mail, text alerts from various sources, weather, etc. I don't have to wait for it to boot, retrieve data and then show me 5mins later - it's already on and has all the info ready and waiting for me. It's a smartphone so I want it to do things for me while I'm sleeping.

As for energy consumption, when I used it for geocaching which uses a lot of battery, my phone needed charging 1 or 2 times a day. But now that I'm using a handheld GPS, my phone is back to being a smartphone and it will often last 2 days before requring another charge. I consider this normal.

This is simply a matter of expecting a "normal" feature that is no longer there...

Your definition of "normal" is not consistent with all phones, so it's not exactly a normal feature. Perhaps you've been lucky in getting phones that have that feature - how many phones have you actually owned? But it most certainly is NOT a universal feature.

If that's what works for you, that's great.

But in regards to life expectancy of electronic devices, your experience is not valid. Micro-electronics are designed to be on all the time. What actually kills most micro-electronics, is the heating/cooling cycles as the component expand/contract cycle causes physical damage to the component. That's why it's better to leave a computer running all the time than turning it on/off every day.

It's a smartphone...let it do its thing and leave it on. I guarantee the device will NOT last any longer if you turn if off every night. Turn it on, leave it on, and use it.

I wasn't trying to be funny. To me if I switch something off it's completely powered down, not on some kind of standby, so if I set an alarm on my phone and then switched it off I really wouldn't expect it to ring, and despite owning maybe a dozen phones over the years it's never crossed my mind that they may work in any other way. I must be weird or something.

I don't get it...the Desire's built-in alarm works the same way, tap to snooze, swipe to turn off. It has the option of setting snooze on/off, 5/10/15 etc. minutes for snooze, and alarms for different times/days.

And you can have any song or sound as your alarm tone. All you need to do is create a folder (if it's not already there) on your memory card labelled "media". Inside that folder create another folder called "audio", and then in there create three folders called "alarms", "notifications", and "ringtones". You can put sound files in those folders and use them for ringtones, notification sounds like text alerts, and alarm wakeup sounds. Once you put them in, the phone will locate them and put the name of the file in the list of choices for alarms, etc., so you can have your favourite tone for an alarm.

You have to remember that Android is an operating system that runs on a computer - in this case that computer just happens to be your phone. Its not integrated with the phone's firmware so, like Windows, when you switch it off, its off till you switch it back on again.

Except some BIOS/mobo's will allow you to turn on the PC to a scheduled time and also there's the whole Wake on LAN thing too.
