Root Where are we with Froyo 2.2 roms? Are the ready for primetime now?

I've been reading a lot on the Froyo ROM's on here. I am ready to finally root my phone and get into the custom ROM scene. From reading all the threads on 2.2, I'm still a little confused as to just how ready they are now. For someone going to their first custom ROM are the 2.2's ready to go, or should I stick with a mature 2.1 ROM and give the 2.2's a little more time. Is the actual real release of 2.2 going to help the custom scene, or has it already moved past that point?

I have honestly been reading a lot on here about rooting, but I still feel a little confused on this.

Agreed. If you're about to root and install some ROMS, 2.2 is the way to go now. I was getting random restarts with 2.1 (so was my friend who is totally stock/unrooted. I haven't seen any random reboots with 2.2. It's definitely faster and with all the extra features (flash content, apps to SD, JIT to name a few), it's a no brainer to go with 2.2 right now if you're rooted.

Now it's going to be funny to see how long it takes them to officially realease it to everyone. It's obvioulsy pretty much ready to go, so now it's just being held up by all the red (Verizon, hah) tape they have to go through to get the OTA push.

I've found the most stable to be bugless beast v 0.1. The newest one has it's issues, but it's workable. If you're looking for a no-nonsense rom with no hiccups or anything, i'd definitely recommend Pete's release. I threw fab's nextbeast theme over it to make it look good, and it has done nothing but perform perfectly for me. Even better than the original stock leak.

I disagree...
I've been rooted since you had to actually download the SDK to root. I've had tons of ROMs, some good and some bad. But the 2.2 ROMs I'm so not pleased with. Lots of issues, random reboots, widgets not working, getting hot. I know, the issue here isn't the developers, but the fact that we are using pre-release code. I came from a Fab's NextBeast 2.1 ROM which was a crazy fast, and very stable. Then coming the next version of BB 2.2 ROMs, the home screens don't draw as fast and things just don't run as well in my humble opinion.

However, it is only a matter of time, a waiting game actually. Once the OTA update for 2.2 drops, all of this will go away.

i've had zero of those issues with BB v.0.1. I guess that just goes to show that no droid is alike.

There is no one answer here...totally a YMMV situation. You're going to have to try it yourself to see how it goes on your particular Droid.

The 2.2 ROMs are based on leaked RC (release candidate) builds of the Android OS...they aren't final, so I don't think we can expect them to be as solid across everyone's phones as the 2.1 ROMs have been lately.

Word is that the source code will be up by the end of June. Once that happens everything will be awesome when it comes to the 2.2 roms (especialy those built from source).

The reason for that is because once the source is put up it is considered a finished release, Redflea and everyone else is correct the 2.2 we have now is just an RC... Now for me (again YMMV) this RC is running pretty nice on my phone and blows away 2.1 so I can only imagine how awesome it will be once the source is released and people like CM, Koush, and the other source devs get a hold of it...

Now to answer your question. As a first ROM I would say no to 2.2 for right now, go with something stable like Cyanogen Mod or an older 2.1 based Bugless Beast. Then once you are comfortable with ROMs and messing around with stuff, I would move on to 2.2... I say this because even though my 2.2 has run awesome so far (on Jrummys rom BTW) When I first downloaded a 2.2 rom I did have to tweak some stuff and do some general bug fixing that most "newbs" would probably not be comfortable with.

Just my 2 cents...

Agreed - Cyanogenmod 5.0.7.1 would be my first choice for a 2.1 ROM...the Genesis themed version is my favorite.

Honestly i have had 0 Issues with the Kangerade 2.2 just released. its awesome, smooth, fast, and stable... not much more that needs to be said

I agree i have been using it for 3 days with the chevy lv 1.1 ghz kernal and it is awesome. My phone never ran this great. I think the key is to wipe the phone, data cache if you want less issues. Havent experienced any FC's or anything.

I just jumped into the the Froyo 2.2 bandwagon and I am quite impressed. Those of you that would like to try a quick, no hassle Froyo custom ROM turn to NexBeast v1.1

Here is the link:
Things I like about NexBeast:

  1. Speed & Slick
  2. Installation options
  3. Simple Installation
  4. Fabolous & Team - great support... frequent updates. :D
Things I like about Froyo:

  1. Fast (was overclocking for 2.1 not for 2.2) :D
  2. Camara (noticed improvement while taking, viewing & editing photos)
  3. Flash
  4. Recent App (increased from 6 to 8)
Those are just a few of the things... if you want to know more... well, I invite you to flash it to your DROID!

Enjoy!

Here's the thing with 2.2. The source hasn't been released, so everyone is basically doing a hack and slash job. The themed ROMs are obviously going to have some issues, if they're not cut from source.

Give it some time. When Google releases the Source Code, you're going to see some pretty amazing work.

I've had the best luck with JRummy's Kangerade, and a p3droid LV 800mhz Kernel. Do not use the minimum speed of 125, though. The OMAP processor does not like that...

^^I agree with this. Although I have great luck with 2.2 Kangerade as well! The Cyan version.

But Cyanogenmod and Bugless Beast are IMO the best of the 2.1 roms and are very solid. These would be good choices for your first root. Then when the official code for 2.2 is released at the end of the month, the 2.2 roms should be just as stable. Which means less messing with stuff by you because it'll work 'out of the box'.

Definitely root and head for a 2.2 based rom. You won't regret it. Honestly I don't think there's much point in rooting if you're not getting a Froyo ROM. Stock Droid can do so much already, and since an official 2.2 release is no where in sight, why wait? Just install one of the many roms available now :)
