Most every other "issue" to this phone has been a non-issue for me to this point.

However, the one feature Samsung really screwed us on is the voice capabilities of the phone. I think they are tied to the Nuance system and therefore unusable by other apps like google voice search and where. I hope samsung or sprint writes a live search app for this phone. I bought the phone with the expectations of this phone being capable of voice commands without being limited by nuance.

Anyone have any insights?

the Moment's voice interface seems to be tied to Nuance and not to Andriod, thus unable to take advantage of the Android voice recognition capabilities. While it's ok to it a button and speak "call -joe p - mobile1" and get a phone number to dial, I want to use google voice search or where voice recognition just as much or maybe more.

After looking around a bit I found the app which came from a HTC Dream phone that has the search with the microphone. RapidShare: 1-CLICK Web hosting - Easy Filehosting

After downloading to my moment and installing it, the microphone shows up but force closes when I try to use it. The regular search still works but voice still hasn't integrated into maps, or handcent.

Let's get this to work!

Absolutely.
I migrated from t-mobile Blackberry Pearl to Sprint Samsung Moment, and I'm seriously thinking about returning the phone.

The Nuance app is fine and seems to work well for initiating phone calls or navigating the Moment/Android menus.

But I NEED TO SEARCH the internet.

For some reason the search applet available for download from Google Mobile is blocked for the Samsung Moment, and that leaves me in the stone age of trying to type out searches while I'm driving!!!!

This Google Voice Search applet is available on the older G1, as well as BB, iPhone and Windows Mobile.

But not on the brand spankin' new Moment? Does anyone have any explanation for this?

Samsung shipped the Moment with Android 1.5 and some sloppy patches to make the thing work.

Does this mean that the voice search works on Android 1.6 and newer?

I used voice search on the t-mobile G1 and on a Blackberry for the past several months - and we traded in both those phones to get onto this "newer" phone. Opps! Serious loss of functionality.

I read several reviews of the Moment, and none of them mentioned the loss of google voice search.

This could seriously curb the adoption of Android if enough people migrate from other smart phone platforms (iPhone, Windows Mobile, and Blackberry) to Samsung Moment to learn that Android doesn't support voice searching.

2.1 is coming and will likely fix the voice issues, but we won't know for sure till it's released sometime in the first half of this year.
2.1 is supposed to support voice-to-text for every text field on the phone. This should mean that not only can you dictate text messages and e-mails to your phone, but you can speak into Google search bars within the browser or anywhere else.

Voice search for the Google search widget is a 1.6 feature, which is why a lot of other Android phones have it and the Moment does not - yet.
