I know its not the same thing, but it's similar. If you really like the swype type keyboard this does work. Available in the market.

I'm registered for the beta and when I tried to install Swype it told me it was "already registered," and that was the last straw. Talk about jumping through hoops. Yeah, Swype is nice, but ...

I've switched to Shapewriter and have been using it all day, and I'll be darned if I don't like it BETTER than Swype. To each his own, but for me personally it just seems more fluid and helpful than Swype ever did - not to mention Swype was always flakey with the long-press-for-punctuation: sometimes it worked, sometimes it beeped at you, with no indication what the issue was.

Shapewriter seems very solid to me and if you can take the time to readjust your swiping habits you might be very happy with it - whether you missed the beta or whether you just got sick of all the roadblocks Swype puts up when they're never going to sell it on the Market anyway.

Well, after I got the message that my trial period was over with Swype, I was pissed off, because I didn't know that there was a trial period in effect. I went and tried Shapewriter, and I love it more than Swype. I found Shapewriter knew exactly what I was spelling, and there was less mistakes. I hope Shapewriter doesn't time out on me. 5 stars for me.

Just an FYI: Shapewriter will be taken off the Marker June 20th, so download v3.09 which does not expire

We plan to take ShapeWriter off the Android Market on June 20 for an indefinite period of time. We ask you to update your ShapeWriter to version 3.0.9 which will not expire. In particular, the paid user should upgrade to the latest version ASAP.

Latest version: ShapeWriter 3.0.9 (for all Android versions)

Don't know why they are doing this...maybe to be more like Swype >_>;;

I really don't understand why Swype is marketing this thing the way they're doing it. There's no way most people could get on that site to download. I tried every 30 minutes for the last day and half and no luck. Why don't they just put it out there for everyone and have more than one download site. It's almost as if they don't want too many people using it. How annoying is that.

Its creating demand. Think Gmail or Google Voice. The fact that there are people on this forum discussing how they want but are not able to get it only creates more buzz. Genius really.

I've been using SlideIt, which I like-it seems to be similar to Shapewriter and Swype from what I'm reading. Anyone have any experience with these, a sense of the differences/advantages one might have over the other? SlideIt is certainly not perfect-words not in the dictionary are hard to enter, sometimes it doesn't seem to manage long words well, but overall I find it fast and easier than other soft keyboards I've used.

Shapewriter is definitely better IMO, when it comes to word precision and speed, ease of use, etc. But.. the caveat is shapwriter takes up slightly more ram than swype, and on memory deprived devices like my moment, hero/eris, g1, etc etc, it can be a problem, even if its only a 4-6mb difference.

However, on newer devices, n1, evo, incredible, galaxy s etc etc, this is no problem at all really. So in the long run, id say shapewriter wins, if its still available. Since they are taking it off market in two days, but hey, I have the apk backed up, in the cloud, on my sd, and on my pc. So I'll be alright.

Swype is much faster and smoother when you're 'swyping' but I like how Shapewriter has the word suggestion rectangular box one line above the keyboard, while Swype does a vertical popup. So it takes longer for you to chose the correct word. I also find Shapewriter has better word prediction and is MUCH easier to enter new words into your dictionary. But it's all a matter of opion.

You should download the version 3.0.9 of Shapewriter now as it doesn't expire once the app is taken off the market. If you don't like it and won't ever use it again, you can simply uninstall it.

Hey IOWA - I tried to back this apk up myself, but going through Astro File Manager, it says (private) next to it. Care to share how you backed up the apk? Thanks in advance (new to android here...)!

I thought you're rooted and use Apps2SD...or that app only works for public apps and not private ones. I remember I read somewhere that if you're rooted, you can save any apps to Apps2SD.

FWIW, ShapeWriter is going to get pulled from the market on the 20th. So if you want to be able to have an alternative now and again, download it soon. Even if you prefer Swype or have no interest in either app, just get it in the off chance you'd like a choice.

One thing I noticed is that I cannot find shapewriter on the market while my N1 is running the unofficial Froyo 2.2. So I can't update the app to 3.0.9. If I my old version expires, I guess I will have to use Swype to which I have the latest beta.
