This method did not work for me, so I downloaded easy tether. That worked great. The only issue I had was when I disconnected my EVO from the laptop I could no longer get a wifi signal on the laptop. I tried everything and then finally just restarted the laptop and that solved my issue.
Are there any additional steps that need to be taken to get the native HTC tethering to work without easy tether? I'd like a cleaner way to do this as well.
No but sprint made sure to make it harder. Good luck with that, some rare few people have used the 3G network for tethering but most of us just get an error 67 when we try it.
Go to unrevoked.com make sure you have an installer app. Root Evo via revoked. Then download Android tether from the market. Now you'll have WiFi tether. No calls tho while thethering until 4g gets here

I can use both tether and pdanet on my Black Mamba running win7. But I keep getting a 67 on some of my other boxes. I did notice when installing apps for tethering on my non win7 boxes that I was getting a popup that said there was a failure installing a specific droid driver and suspect that may be the cause of the 67 error.
I found a link when I googled the 67 error that said one possible solution was to install (or update) the droid SDK which would then install the needed driver. I downloaded the SDK, but got some JAVA error when I tried to install it. By that time I was in caffeine withdrawal so I just stopped messing around and got another cup of coffee.
Bottom line for me is that the box you are trying to connect the Evo to needs to be set up right and have the right drivers for tethering to work.
I have a question. I never signed up for the tethering plan; however, just today I was able to enable 4G and connect and then go into the settings on my phone and enable the hotspot feature. How long will I be able to do this?

I used it for 20 mins. I work from home and my home internet went down and I had read somewhere awhile ago that Sprint wouldn't lock this down until later. So I gave it a shot and I was able to connect to it through my laptop using the wireless connection and then VPN'ed into work and it was fast and stable.
Works without rooting, use Easy Tether, successful over 3G and ROAM networks. I stayed connected 95% of a 300 mile drive from Virginia to South Carolina.
1 thing of note with Easy Tether, you must run the EasyTether app each time and make sure it says "All Features Available" then right click the system tray app and select "connect" have not tried with a linux machine yet, will disable my pc network connection tonight and try to tether. I run Ubuntu at home.
I'm looking into getting something for our road trip from Maryland to Florida this august. My friends have iPod touches and i want them to be able to hook up to my wifi tether.
Also, tether.com has a android beta out now.. i downloaded and tried it.. it's with a USB cable (for now), but works great.. no root necessary.. beta is free but it will cost when released.. worked great on the blackberry fwiw..
If you download dozens of movies every month, Sprint's probably going to notice, and if the decide you've been tethering they can cancel your account. Tethering without paying for a tethering plan is a violation of your TOS.
And you should be able to get a call while tethering. Your data connection will freeze, but phone calls take precedence over data.
