Yes, i agree. But dont you think the silent call issue is a legitimate issue? I wouldve exchanged it for the unrootable one anyways had they let me, the root part was just a bonus for me.

The silent issue is definitely real and I would return my phone too if it had that issue. But verizon and htc know that the old bootloader leaves the phone vulnerable. They want to lock it down.

And people have returned good phones with the leak just to get one they can root. I'm sure verizon would like to put an end to that. If replacements are shipping with 1.49, you will see a lot fewer returns.

hmmmm interesting.ill be brief:

Ive had two eris' on a Famplan. phones were fine. until you made more than 10 calls. Then it starts lagging like crazy. S#it gets really annoying when you start missing calls repeatedly, even though you are pressing call or trying to slide the accept bar

Nevertheless I leaked them both. Phones worked fine for about a week..then same thing as before.4 days of missed calls later i called and had a vzwcs rep send me a refurbished. 1 week later i had my refurbished 1.5 eris. I immediately rooted the eris in less time than it took me to get it out of the box. now that was a good phone, and it had a happy ending.
Now on the other side of the coin, the other eris was called in for a replacement 2 weeks later.After experiencing the same crap right out of the box, they sent me yet another eris. Unfortunately, at this point vzw was giving out "1.49 S-on" Eris'. These are completely facked and locked. I got 2 of them in a row. I feel the best way to tell what youre getting is by looking in the battery compartment. In there, is a serial number of sorts. If that sticker has a I on the lower right corner of it, then you are the proud new owner of a unrootable 2.1 eris. :/

My point, the Eris sucks if its not rooted.... and now VZW is taking that away. This makes the rooted eris' much more valuable than the ones vzw is giving out. no offense to anyone here, btw.

I just think its hilarious that almost all the Verizon techs have theirs rooted. the guy I spoke with yesterday even offered to root it for me in the store!

Its tough, but not impossible. If you jiggle the USB cable while scrolling down, it works.

Or you could just use the RUU available on xda. I think it was posted on this site as well. That way you could avoid the trackball entirely.

Since the root bootloader is 1.49.2000 and the RUU bootloader is 1.49.0000, will the RUU actually install over a rooted phone? (I'm not planning to try myself.)

thats a narrow minded way of looking at things. So on that note, yes. if thats what it means to you, then you are entitled to your opinion. To others it means the ability to customize their phone 100% to their liking. Flash new firmware for the radio in the cellphone, install apps to the sd card, Wireless teether,overclock the cpu( the eris comes UNDERCLOCKED if you ask me), flash a custom android rom to remove all of vzw's useless fluff, try upcoming os update roms like froyo. All of these things combined make ROOT a valuable tool when it comes to owning a android phone.

That is just what i can think of, off the top of my head. I in no way consider myself a adb power user...but seriously, its not that hard.

You say you dont want root, and that is fine. though i guarantee that if i rooted your phone, you would eat your words. Honestly i think you based your opinion on 0 facts. If you were lent a rooted phone for 24 hours, you would not want to give it up on the 24th hour.

Today i took my leaked Eris into Verizon to try to get them replace it, not because i have the leak, but because of the silent call issue. Unfortunately, due to me buying it off of craigslist, the tech guy couldn't replace it. However, he did show me a tech bulletin he received yesterday that basically stated that Verizon and Google are both aware of issues (Cell standby, Silent call, etc) with both the Eris and the Incredible, And that they would be sending an OTA update soon to resolve this problem. Hopefully the leaks will still be able to update, though there shouldn't be any reason why they wouldn't.

I thought you guys over here at android forums would like to hear about this, if you havent already as it seemed like new news.

Im keeping my fingers crossed that this will be froyo, Though it sounds like its just going to be a silly incremental update.

Also, and yes i realize this is all over the forum but all of those seem to be outdated, has ANY progress been made with root for the leaks (hboot 1.49)?

tl;dr version: Verizon will be releasing a bug fix ota update soon!!

EDIT: The guy also assured me that it was only the microphone in the phone that was causing the problem. If you used a bluetooth headset or a wired one, it would fix the problem until the update was released.

RootedEris, I know where are you coming from - am I a sw developer myself...so I know tweaking can be fun and addictive...

Of course, it is upto the person what he/she does with the phone.
To me: There are tens of thousands of apps for the Android out there for 10000 different things. I have downloaded (only) 5 apps out of them and I am pretty happy with the phone I have. I should note though that this is my first smart phone and I am still learning this thing.

No doubt someone will do that and then turn it into a rom.
Im just hoping we finally get root for 1.49. We will eventually, but not before froyo comes out for everything but the eris.

Wifi tether is where you turn your 3g connection on your phone into a wifi hotspot. Kinda like mifi, if your familiar with that?

I don't have any LAN connections in my house, for example, and I had to buy wireless cards for two computers. Thethering with WiFi, in a room separate from your router, for example, could save buying an adapter or card for your computer, or serve as a backup if your card or adapter breaks.

this is not actually what you get when you root......... people often confuse the the term wifi tethering

we already have the ability to tether via usb and use the phones wifi connection to connect through a router or hotspot..... this can be done with apps like pdanet

what you get when you root is the ability to turn the phone itself into a wifi hotspot.......... meaning if youre in an area where theres no other internet access........ lets say your on a group camping trip and 4 people bring their laptops........ they could all connect wirelessly to your phone and use your phones 3G connection to reach the internet

I can certainly see why Verizon would not want to allow this. It is things like this that will cause us to lose our unlimited data.

overclocking(set at heavy/normal/light use, at will), wifi tether,slim roms.NO LAG.
