Root How do I know if, and what method was used?

the guy I bought my evo from said he rooted, it, I asked if he used to toast method, said no, that he used another method that was all manual, not using a web service.

How do I know which method he used?

Wile using Astro I found under /sdcard a file called ._Supersonic_1.32.651.1_rooted.zip size 4,096, another file like it but without the ._ and size 157,880,590, and there is a nandroid backup folder, DamagecontrolV3.

Under apps I found a blue # that says superuser permission.

Let me know if any of these things are just common files, or if they give you an idea as to what method may have been used.

The unrevoked is limited on what it can actually do no custom roms or such. Just able to run apps that need superuser permission. I hope this helps. Thanks for the response, but yes, im still clueless. I keep seeint mention of Toast, unrevoked, Fresh, full root, damagecontrol.....its confusing.

The files suggest he rooted with Toast's method. Toast rooted the phone and created the fresh roms I believe. Damage control and bugless beast are roms created by other guys that rely on toast's method of root. I'm using fresh 3.

Thanks, I'd like to hear from others as well to determine if it was Unrevoked or Toast, or other method.

Will this alone be definitive in determining wether it was unrevoked or toast?

There are only 2 root methods out right now as far as I know. Unrevoked and Toast's. There would be an app installed called unrevoked if that was the method used. DamageControl is a 3rd party ROM. Those can only be installed if the device was rooted using Toast's method.

If you are concerned about how it was done, you could always restore the device to the factory firmware and re-root it yourself.

Toast developed the root method.

Flipzmode is responsible for the fresh ROM.

I don't have any app named Unrevoked, when I asked the seller did he use toast he said no, hedidnt even seem to know hat toast was, he sad therewas a method that is don online but is not complete and then there is a manua mthod which is complte, he said that is hat h did....however none of that sounds reotey close to anything I've bn reading in the forms, so far I ben eading toast or unrevoke, yt, he didnt eve know hat toast was....im cluesless as to what mthod he used.

I haven't installed nothing more tha free aps, so retoring and redoing it myself wuld not be a problem. I just still havent got on my other thread a detailed answer as to the pro's/cons of either method, and got even more confused when i read threads talking about "full root", so now im wondering it there is 2 or 3 methods.

Seems like the online method he was referring to was Unrevoked.

So, maybe he did Toast, he had a Hero as well, I wonder if the rooting methods are the same, if not, hopefully he didnt use a method inteded for another model.

I'd hate to restore and re-root, but, you think maybe is best if I do that and start from scratch, that way I know what was done?

No factory for me, i like customizing my phones, I rooted my Pre.

A few questions about restoring, how do i do it, and how do I back up all my contacts, I definetly don't want to lose that, and text messages if thats possible.

As far as returning to stock, there is a post in the first couple of pages of this forum that describes the process. I've never done it myself, so I can't really advise you on that.

If you sync your contacts with a gmail account you don't need to worry about backing them up. If you don't, I'm not really sure what to tell you except that you may want to look into syncing your contacts with gmail

I send all of my txt's through GV, so I've never had to worry about those either.

Since you are rooted you can use Titanium Backup (get it from the android market). I have used this to backup app data between ROM flashes, but it can probably do txt's and contacts as well. You'll have to read up on it though since I've never used it for that.

I like to customize my phone as well, which is why I rooted it using Toast's method. There may still be some value for you in running stock for a few days just to see what's different once you root.

Yup, I did just that, I rooted myself last night following the tutorial, now waiting to hear on my other thread about pro's and con's on the different roms available, feel free to have a look and post your thoughts.

That's all a matter of opinion. I would try em all, give em a bit, and choose what you like best. I personally like damagecontrol the best, but fresh is good too.

installed bugless, didnt like, installing damage as we speak, download over rom manager has been close to an hour via wifi, might have to do manually.
