When I type mkdir /system/sd it says "cannot create, file exists." yet nand+ext fails and says run nandroid-mobile.sh via adb every time.

nandroid-mobile.sh via adb works perfect but that is just annoying

You forgot to mount /system (using the Amon_RA boot instructions)

Yes, there is a /system/sd in the "initrd" (the Ramdisk that the forms the root file system of the recovery boot). But that is not the mount point used by the ext partition on the SD card during Nandroid+ext backup/restores. The /system/sd in "initrd" doesn't get used - it gets "covered up" when you mount the system flash partition on /system. ( <== I know that sentence is confusing as all get out, but that's exactly what you are doing: mounting a flash memory partition on top of /system - and there needs to be a "sd" directory inside that flash partition to make the Nandroid+ext backup/restore work correctly )

Re-read the instructions in the XDA post.
