Help Desire turning itself off

Now in day 6th of owning my Desire and I found in the last couple of days when I've taken it out of the pouch that it has turned itself off. Where I would normally press the on/off button to wake it up from the black screen, it instead vibrates and goes thru the motion of starting back up as if its been turned off and asking me for my SIM PIN.

I usually press the on/off button once to put it to "sleep" mode before putting it in the pouch. sometimes i don't even do that and just put it in the pouch and after leaving it on the bench for a while when I go back to it I have to turn it back on. So I know the on/off button hasn't accidently been pushed.

The battery is also medium to full charged when this happens so its not a low batt issue.

anyone else experience this problem?

yeah mine does this too. just turns off. then sometimes it won't turn back on. sometimes it does, but other times it turns on, displays the first telstra startup screen, and then turns off again. battery is fully charged.
Also sometimes when i pull the power cord out after a few hours of charging, it would just turn off! then i gotta turn it on again.. if i'm lucky. i love the phone if they can fix this. it is a MAJOR problem. i gotta keep checking to see if its on, i feel like i'm O.C.D

btw... Phone is from Telstra. firmware 2.1 Update 1

I ended up getting it replaced and its now perfect hadn't turned itself off once since. Maybe take tours back to the telstra shop. They might send it off for repairs for you coz it should nt be doing that.

This phone is getting worst. I am facing the same problem, it turns off itself, reboots and gets hanged. Did we pay to face this? I read somewhere that this is due to some software problem, in that case, it occurs to me that if one wants to go for Android, just buy the Google's own phone, presently - Nexus One - at least there won't be problems as in manufacturer's own UI or software; and these manufacturers also make us wait ages for software upgrades.

If it's software, if you restore it to factory settings, the issue should be resolved as it isn't like that out of the factory.

Yeah, but the problem is that this started happening after I was made to reset it to factory settings in the first place.
Anyway, I just called HTC Customer Service and they advised me to do reset again. So, I have done it and let's see whether it's resolved or not.

Hell!

Thinking about to leave Android or if it's HTC. It's just not ready to be taken, I think.

I know your frustrated, but it's not android or htc. mine works perfectly, & so do most people's here.

2 options, one of the apps you mentioned downloading is poorly written or you've just been unlucky enough to get a faulty one.

If it were me, I would restore it one more time & keep any customising to a minimum to eliminate the possibility of bad software. if it still turns off, get it replaced/repaired.

Take it back dude... it is obviously faulty. I had 4 faulty handsets, and this is exactly what one of mine was doing.

Does any one have any issues with their phones turning off, but cant turn it back? Ive only had my phone for a week, and its been shutting down on me, and the only way for me to turn it back on is for me to plug it into the charger .

I've had my desire for the last 14 months and it played up ocasionally in the first six months then it started to get worse and I took it back to the Telstra shop for repair. I told them the problem with the thing turning itself off regularly and just before the 12 month warranty expired had it looked at. It came back with "no fault found but we updated the software and all should be good now". It was good for a month or so and then it started doing the same thing again perhaps once a week and I blamed it on an app. at first untill it started to get so frequent that it anoid me more and more. so back to the Telstra shop, they sent it away again but the I was told that the thing was out of warranty and it would cost me 209.50 for a new motherboard. I have declined on that repair cause I dont want to fork out that sort of money for a crappy phone/repair job
This is clearly a HTC/Telstra issue but nobody wants to do something about it. there are heaps of people with exactly that particular problem on a HTC desire what is wrong with these people???
I'm shopping around now for an Iphone see how that goes

I had similar issues with my HTC Desire: turning itself off when idle in my pocket; also few times in the middle of longish call. Called customer services who asked me to do soft and hard reset but this did not work. As it's still under warrantee sent it back to repair centre, they replaced the motherboard but it still did it within 1 hour of receiving it back; sent it again and they put another motherboard (as they said!) but it did the same; they finally sent me the phone back together with HTC HD phone. I seriously belive it's a cpu heat problem as it only happens if you keep it in your pocket for a longish period or when you are talking for 10 minutes or over!!
So if you have the problem and you have the receipt I believe the warantee is for 2 yrs, so send it back to HTC and they have to either repair or replace.

I am a HTC user in Taiwan and I bought my HTC Desire S a few months ago. It started turning off by itself about a month in. I sent it back and was told that this is a software issue. They've done all kinds of updates and it should be fine etc.

But the problem was totally NOT fixed. If I so much as flick my wrist while holding the phone, it shuts off.

Please don't settle if they tell you this is a software problem. Take your phone back and demand that they fix it or replace it or something. It's totally ridiculous and we shouldn't settle for this kind of quality issue.

I'm taking mine back to the HTC shop today. If no good answers are forthcoming, I'll post a youtube video demonstrating the phone's fault so that others don't end up buying this model.

from reading Taiwanese user forums, it seems that the problem is in the fit between casing and battery - in certain types of movements the battery becomes disconnected, and thus the phone turns off.

I changed the battery to one with a tighter fit, I tried a hard reset, I tried setting it to gsm only as HTC suggested me, I tried each and every solution I could find. It just started out of the blue, had nothing to with apps etc. Nor the battery, as it turned out.
I was thinking about just giving up. Sending it back to HTC for repairs would probably cost me, and I wasn't looking forward to that.
Then I thought, what the hell, I'm just going to root my device and put a rom on it (cyanogenmod 7) and the problem is fixed! It's weird, but true. Well, no more warranty, but my phone works better than ever!
So, if anyone is looking for a solution to this problem, and you're ready to give up, this could do the trick for you. It won't work for everyone, but it might for some.

I have had an HTC desire S since September 2011 that has started turning itself off with increasing regularity. I see this has happened to other users, and from reading everything it seems that the only way to sort this out is to have the handset replaced. Does anyone know of any other fix for this problem that really works as I live in Zimbabwe and it's not that easy to get the handset replaced. Thanks v much.

It's unlikely that their solution will work for you though. This thread was discussing the original HTC Desire (model A8181, codename Bravo), released in 2010, and not one of the many, many other phones that HTC have included "Desire" in the name of since. So unless you happen to also be using the original Desire, as opposed to a Desire S/C/3xx/6xx/8xx/etc, the chances are that whatever is causing your problem is different from whatever was causing theirs.

You've already tried a factory reset and safe mode, so it's unlikely to be one of your apps (was always unlikely).

Did the problem start after you modified the software, e.g. installed a custom ROM? If so then you need to undo whatever you did.

Did the problem start shortly after a system update? If so it's possible that the update is responsible, in which case it may be possible to do something, though if the phone is unmodified and S-ON it won't be easy.

If there had been no system software changes before it started and a reset doesn't fix it then it's probably a hardware fault. In that case we can't help, all you can do is repair or replace the phone.
