The Droid X is $199 and $70/mo without the $10/mo "premium data" fee...

Hrmmm I never thought I'd see the day where Sprint was nickel and diming its customers more than Verizon (the king of overpricing) on a similar high end phone but I guess today's the day. $70/mo vs $80/mo - $240 more over a 2 yr period...

Gizmodo, the Gadget Guide

4g wont be in my area for awhile (Inland Empire, CA) and I probably woupdnt use it anyways due to battery drain so is there any real reason to get the Evo over the DroidX?

If anything I hope this gets Sprint to drop the fee. Competition is great :)

Ok let's see pay 10 less for just 3G coverage or 10 more for 4G service and its expansion....

I know my answer

Ok let's see.. the $10 fee is for the phone, not 4G service, so your point is invalid. Eh, but I guess you're talking more about investment towards more 4G, but then again, you don't think Verizon is moving toward LTE? So, still invalid!

I think the differences are unlimited text, picture mail, and anymobile anywhere (and some others I've missed).

Oh, and didn't Verizon throw in an explicit data cap too?

I live a half hour away from sprints headquarters in Kansas City, my city has over 80,000 people in it and sprint told me they have no plans in the near future to add 4g in my area. I use wifi in my house anyways so i would rather pay 10$ less and get faster 3g then pay $10 for a network i dont get and slow 3g speeds on top of that.

from the article..

it's better than the evo really... but i dont want to leave sprint. i would really appreciate it if motorola would consider having their better phones on sprint too..

-4.3-inch, 854x480 display
-8 megapixel camera
-720p video recording
-1GHz TI OMAP processor (successor to the chip in the original Droid)
-8GB internal storage (plus microSD)
-HDMI out
-720p video
-true multitouch keyboard, with pre-loaded Swype
-Wi-Fi hotspot powers for up to 5 devices.
-"High performance diversity antennas" for call quality
-Battery life comparable to the original Droid
-3, yes three mics: for video and noise suppression
-It's not getting Android 2.2 until "late summer" (boooo!)
-It's $200 after $100 mail-in rebate when it comes out July 15—the bonus is that they're pulling an AT&T, so anybody eligible for an upgrade anytime in 2010 can upgrade immediately.
-Standard unlimited $30 data plan; $20 extra for mobile hotspot powers which comes with 2GB. Another $20 nets you an extra 2GB of data a month

A couple of the call center folks in Kansas City also told me that the signal quality is abysmal out there and they're on Verizon anyway lol

Mods? Why is thread in the Evo section?? Don't we have sections for other phones???

I posted it because quite a few people are pissed about the fee and might want to know of the news before they're 30 day return policy expires.

I'd rather give people affected by the fee the knowledge of options available rather than hide it from them just so I could feel better about my purchase.

Whoa....slow down

Lte is coming but you'll be a fool to think Verizon want add an extra 10 or more to use 4G. Also the ten isn't for the phone, but the wimax service and expansion. I mean seriously, it want pay for itself.
Still the eighty dollars is cheap compared to other plans with data caps and no 4G service, so your argument really doesn't vaildate anything here. Wimax is expanding slowly, but they have the ball rolling in the right direction. I mean seriously its ten dollars a month, if the ten was that big of an issue why buy the phone?

You are forgetting a few key points.
1. Sense UI beats the snot out of ninja or any blur.
2. Sprint let's u upgrade primary line every year.
3. Verizon has 325 etf.

Those are big deals.

I love the fact that with premier you can upgrade every year. If you live where you get alright Sprint coverage (like me) 1-2 bars in my house, but outside 3-4 and just outside of full coverage cities, you can't beat that! Unless you are loaded and $ isn't an issue! I am so glad I switches from vzw to Sprint. iphone 3gs > HTC Incredible > Evo and couldn't be happier. Now just need to get a new assembly process Evo!

It's an apples to oranges comparison.

1. When Verizon does roll out 4G you might pay a premium then.
2. no unlimited mobile to mobile
3. Data cap? Tethering fees? Wifi hotspot?

Either way I'm not going to worry about this now as I am locked into sprint. My gf is looking to upgrade but stay with sprint so its a shame this doesn't come out for sprint. I guess we will see what samsung has to offer before she pulls the trigger on an EVO.

I agree, I think its good to know for Evo owners still thinking about canceling.

With Verizon you can upgrade every year as long as your calling plan costs more than $49.99. Essentially, as long as you don't have the cheapest calling plan they offer.

Personally i dont mind paying a $10 fee if for the 4G speeds and a newer technology..Even thou Sprint wont admit that that what the $10. is going towards. Plus 4G wont be available here(Denver) intill Oct. of this year. There are certain spots that have 4G in the metro area, but not in my area.

That makes no sense. So the people that dont have 4g and wont for a very long time have to pay the same exact fee that people that had 4g from the phones launch? Why not have a option to pay the fee and get 4g if you want and if you dont want it then dont pay the fee and Sprint locks out your 4g untill you do want to pay for it?

The inherent issue is money towards use vs money towards investment. At this point, the majority of Sprint users don't have 4G to USE, so they believe the fee is used towards INVESTMENT. On the other hand, with the Droid X, it's just plain ol' 3G still so there's no reason to charge a fee anyway. We all know that this fee Sprint charged us is for the perk of just having the most advanced phone [at the moment].

I have no problem with the fee, which is why I'm paying it. I just wouldn't justify it by saying it's an investment towards 4G because most Evo users will likely never see 4G before they replace it in a year with a more advanced phone.

Why does everyone think that just because we find issues with the justification for the fee that we have a problem with it just because it makes the plan more expensive? Jump on the bandwagon will you?

i dont understand this part:
-Standard unlimited $30 data plan; $20 extra for mobile hotspot powers which comes with 2GB. Another $20 nets you an extra 2GB of data a month

$30 for unlimited data plan.. but you have a 2gb blocks of data for $20?

just looked at thier plans:
$60(450 min) + $30 (data) + ?? Navi + $3 (vvm) = >$93
