best free task manager?

I just use the one that came pre-installed on the Droid. Go to Settings -> Applications -> Running Services. From this screen you can just touch any program that you would like to terminate and it will shut it off.

I added a shortcut to my home screen for quick/easy access to it so I don't have to navigate through the menu each time. Works well for me.

Yeah, but Advanced Task Manager Free is miles ahead of it. :)

This is a true statement, I've used both and I stuck with ATM.

+5 to this - I used TK for all of a day - then found ATM and never looked back....

Last I checked the Service killer does not list everything that is running, only things that are running as a service....

I did a comparison with ATM / TK and this, and unless I missed an extended option or something, there was a lot of stuff that was not being reported by the Service list....

ATM is better than the stock one. I also have that shortcut set up, but never use it. ATM lets you shut things off with a check list so you can kill everything or just the few apps that auto start all the time.

Yup - and it allows for uninstalling apps as well, a major bonus in my case as I try things out and then get tired of them and remove them - a lot

do you want to kill advanced task manager itself also?

usually, yes, but if you use it a lot (not really necessary, but it is your phone) then it might not be a bad idea to leave it running.

Scratch that - it takes so little time to load I really cannot see the benefit of leaving it running at all....

I differ on ATM... I tried out "Advanced Task Manager", "Taskiller", and "Advanced Task Killer" and prefered ATK in the end. not quite as complex and full functioned as ATM, but its quicker for me. It does have an exclude list, but unlike ATM, in ATK when an item is excluded, you'll never see it! This is PERFECT for quickly glancing at the list of running apps (the actual apps that are running and open for killing). So you only see a few things rather than digging through a list. ATK also allows you to setup an automatic action to happen when you fast or slow tap an app. Again, just that little bit of saved effort over tapping an app and then selecting what you want to do from the menu. ATM does a few more things, but ATK did EXACTLY what I wanted it to, and not a bit more, and it did it a little faster.
