N1 AMOLED v Apples Retina Display

Mostly Harmless

I try real hard not to be a fan boy and really try to appreciate new technology as it comes, no matter what company produces it. But right now I am having a hard time believing the Retina display on the new iPhone is all that great or much better then the AMOLED on my N1. I am saying this after I tried to read engadgets review on the iPhone, I say tried because it's not a secret that Engadget has always been fanboy level pro-apple website (I am almost threw up when I saw they called the DInc dated) and there review just shows it even more. But when I got to about halfway down the page of the review where they show the two screens you can still see pixels on the 4's display (I know this is taken at an extremely close level), but when I hold my N1 real close to my face I have trouble seeing pixels also. I haven't seen the screen in person (I will soon because my father got the new iphone) but when I do I am going to take a real close look to see how much difference there is. From the start the N1's screen has always impressed me.

iPhone 4 review -- Engadget

As for engadget, I am getting pretty close to not viewing that site anymore, specially after reading there N1 review.

I like my N1's screen but all the shots of the Retina screen aren't lying. I want to see one and hold it where a phone belongs but it looks really good in pictures. I think the hardware of the new iPhone looks great. Can't stand the UI or Apple's policies though. I could never give up widgets now that I use them all the time.

As for engadget they seem to be getting better actually, I just turn off the comments. I actually though that review was one of the better one's that they have done.

Those iphone4 reviews crack me up, full of "innovations" like half-arsed multitasking, video calling (but only to other iphone4s and only over wifi!), folders, and a coming feature called "widgets", will wonders never cease! They'll figure out a way to do audio communication at a distance next.

Is this a joke!? Apple's retina display sh*ts on our AMOLED screens and it's not even close. Have you tried using your screen outside? You can make all the excuses you want but its pretty damn terrible in the sun. I'm sure Super AMOLED will be good competition but I have yet to see it in person.

TFT LCD sh*ts on AMOLED screen when it comes to sunlight legibility too ;)

AMOLED's sunlight legibility is just a big fat joke. I want Super AMOLED please

definitely not that great outside, but i suppose i'm just not much of an outdoors user...

i just don't care that much about outdoor usability. I do care about color contrast and quality. As far as i can tell the amoled screen is top notch in that department.

I'm sorry but my co-worker got his iPhone 4 yesterday and the display on his phone is SIGNIFICANTLY nicer than my N1. Its brighter, much better resolution, better colors and is crisp and clear even outside. I'm now thinking of switching to the iPhone 4 when it's more readily available.

Nice to know you have people who can get things before the release date.

Also nice to know that all it takes is a better screen to get you to switch..

Interesting standards you have there.

I hope that "retina" display doesn't backfire you on.

Am I the only one in the world skeptical of super amoled's?

I mean.. sure test can be proformed and such.. but, lets face it.. there are a lot of people anxious to jump ship for a brand new product which could sink -.-

xbox 360 anyone?

I wasn't interested in nexus one till after it came out.. infact I really didn't know much about android until recently..

But, I've seen some things and said "woah not worth it no way!" and later on decided they were not as important or things could be worked around..

We still have no idea what we are really dealing with at this point.. it hasn't been out for a week.. and everyone and their grandmother is acting like its been out for years "Oh yeah.. Its tried and tested I'm sure nothing will go wrong!"

Many people had their iPhone delivered via FedEx yesterday and today (2 days and 1 day prior to launch) and my co-worker was one of them. The display is just one of many reasons I'm leaning towards switching back. iOS is simply much more polished than Android 2.1 (haven't tried 2.2 yet) and there are far less glitches. The ONE thing that is holding me with Android is the Google Voice integration which is awesome.

I find this incredibly hard to believe. I don't want to say impossible but, I don't see how someone could have had an iphone 4 delivered when there is no where online to even buy it yet.

And apple has such tight control over everything else they do.. I doubt they would let them ship out before the offical release date.. I mean stores that are suppose to get them don't even have them yet.

people who pre-ordered them are having them delivered now.

they did sell out initially but they're still sending them out to people who pre-ordered. sometimes they can't control how the delivery goes...

check giz or engadget.

I have one on order as well but i'm just going to sell it on ebay to subsidize my plan... i'll take it out and look at the screen but it's not going to do anything for me.

apples system is ridiculous. closed and under tight control. Their system isn't polished at all it's just simple for simple people. Their notification system is absurd and the scrolling grid is easy to make "smooth" let me put widgets and all other manner of stuff on their screens and we'll see how that goes. The battery life however does sound nice. Their screens i'm sure are very nice and sharp at this point but i doubt they have the color depth and contrast that the amoled does. Nothing has been able to touch it yet...

i'll let you guys know in a week.

Apple did start shipping the iPhone4's that were pre-ordered and people have been getting them this week. They just can't activate them until tomorrow. (a glitch in the activation network allowed a precious few to activate immediately, but that was stopped and now the rest have to wait.)

My co-worker got one today. I compared it to my Droid Incredible.
We pulled up nytimes and engadget side-by-side. It made me want to puke. I will post pictures in a few days. Despite the larger 3.7 amoled screen, the IPS screen was a gazillion times sharper. On NY times, you could read a font sentence that appeared to be 6 points. That was how sharp it was.

Pictures of items on white background, side-by-side, you could see the problems with Pentile Matrix on the HTC AMOLED screen. It was very noticeable to even the un-trained eyes.

This could be a reason that makes a person want to switch a phone. It is that freaking sharp.

mrspeed I would like to see pictures, I am not doubting you I just want to see how much better.

Blah blah blah I'm a tech-illiterate Apple fanboy. There, translated it for you.

Check out the "Is your iPhone 4 retina display seeing yellow spots?" poll. I'm sure it is an Android conspiracy, right guys? Apple products are so polished and everything.

I agree with roze.. I really don't care if other people are interest in features I consider pointless...

If apple fans want to make a big deal out of the screen let them.

If android people are going to hop ship over the screen be my guest..

At least i know that the n1 has a risk of burn in and I should be aware of it..

No clue what possible problems are gunna come up with the new iphone..

Honestly.. I hate to use this cliche.. but, looks are skin deep.

*edit*

And I expect apple fans to say pretty much the same to me in the event I ever adopt an android in the first few days of its release..

The difference is that, generally, Android fanboys don't show up on forums dedicated to Apple/iPhones. You only get the other way around. Which says all you need to know, really.

An apple fanboy wouldn't have ever switched to Android to begin with. That goes against the very definition of what a fanboy is! Don't be a bitter tool just bc someone disagrees with you about the N1 screen compared to the iphone 4 when you haven't even seen both! If anything you're the one who sounds like an android fanboy! Grow up.

The problem with sites that favor Apple products more is the fact that they no longer address some of the major shortcoming on the new iphone as flaws anymore and basically decide to accept it as the Apple way and never to bring it up again. Now can you imagine if Samsung, HTC or Moto release a Android or WinMo phone without the ability to swap out batteries, a micro USB port, Wifi only video calls, half ass multitasking, lack of widgets or decent notification system and limited folder options..I bet no site on earth would call the phone the best smartphone available, yet non Apple phones will get scrutinize for little things like.."Well..only one LED flash or case made out of plastic even though the phone is solid..."
