Root About to root for the first time! =D

Ok...

So I have 2.1-update 1 on my phone. I'm about to follow this tutorial, and then download Bugless beast, as I hear it's insanely fast.

I have a few questions.

1.) This is my first time EVER attempting to root. Is there any way to save my apps or backup data from my stock version and carry it over to my rooted version? Or do I just have to do the "google backup", where it just puts everything back on my phone by itself.

2.) Also, which version is good for being stable for bugless beast? I've looked at the different versions and was thinking 1ghz, but what's the SV, LV, and IV mean? I know it's voltage, but what effect does this have on the phone?

I think this is all, but any other tips or tricks to making this go smoothly would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Just follow the guide and if you run into issues, just post back in this thread. Get rooted first, then pick out your rom. (Rom Manager is perfect for this and has a stable BB) When talking about 1gHz, LV, SV, MV; thoat applies to the type of kernel you are using. This will allow you to overclock to 800, 900, 1gHz, whatever, and the diff voltages should help with battery life. Diff kernels will have a diff effect on each phone.

1. Follow guide and root.

2. Get phone set up with apps and such. (Don't go to crazy, this will just be your failsafe backup prior to flashing a new rom/kernel/baseband)

3. Backup apps with Titanium Backup.

4. Make a nandroid backup of your phone. (Rom Manager)

5. When phone reboots, make sure you have a backup by checking it out via rom manager.

6. Get some BB action via Rom Manager, set it up.

7. Restore any apps that didn't automatically restore via Titanium Backup.

8. Make another backup!

9. Get a kernel, flash it. (You will probably be flashing diff ones to find the right one for your phone.

10. Baseband upgrade via rom manager if you want. (Backup again prior to this, you never know what is going to happen)

IV = increased voltage
SV = standard voltage
MV = medium voltage (i think it's medium)
LV = low voltage
ULV = ultra low voltage.

Lowering the voltage to the CPU decreases the heat it generates and increases battery life at a given clock speed. It also becomes less stable though.

For example:

Your phone might only be able to use a 1000mhz ULV kernel before you start having problems with it restarting itself. If you bumped up to LV it might be able to handle 1100mhz or 1200mhz, but lose some battery life.

The OMAP chip in everyone's phone will respond differently to overclocked kernels. You have to find the right balance between performance and battery life. If you really want that high clock speed you might have to go with a higher voltage and thus have a phone that runs hotter and the battery drains faster.

Also you can be lucky, like myself, and have a phone that runs perfectly on a 1200mhz ULV kernel.

Glad to see you are rooted. If you are using BB 1.1 you are using a 2.1 based ROM, and there are currently 2.2 based ROMs with things like Chrome to Phone and Flash working, not to mention they are faster. You might want to check them out.

Everything seems great! but how do I put on different Kernels? You have to download them And wait, what's this about nandriod? nandroid is the way you make a complete backup of the phone so if anything goes wrong, you have a working point to restore back to. You can do this from within your recovery software, or ROM Manager I don't have a rom manager in my menu! :'( Download ROM Manager from the market

The kernels are installed the same way you install a ROM- when you reboot the phone into the recovery console. If you use clockwork, just put the kernel .zip file on the SD card and apply it in clockwork. If you use SPRecovery, rename the kernel file to update.zip, and put it on the root of your sdcard. Then reboot into SPRecovery, and apply the update.zip

DO NOT WIPE ANYTHING WHEN INSTALLING A KERNEL! Just apply the kerel zip file. Reeboot, and you have the new kernel.

Flashing a zip file from recovery is essential knowledge with a rooted phone. I can't really guide you through what you're asking because I don't know what theme you have, what ROM it is meant for, etc and you could follow the procedure and just end up getting stuck in a boot loop or something and have to start from scratch. Flashing stuff through ROM manager is much more noob friendly.

If you don't have at least a basic knowledge you are just going to be flashing stuff to the phone without knowing what you are doing and will end up having problems.

Before you do anything, I would restart the phone in recovery mode (hold X on the keyboard as the phone starts up) and make a nandroid backup.

Verizon regularly does system maintenance around this time. Just give it a bit.

Yes. I was in the same boat and I thought I messed up somewhere. Just give it some time for their system to come back.

EDIT: I just confirmed it by dialing *22899. "Programming unsuccessful" Just wait it out.

So... I'm about to install a LV 1ghz kernel, and I know I can just do a "update.zip" method... correct? And also, if I'm doing a new bugless beast theme, do I use the same thing? I know I don't have to wipe before a kernel update, but what about a theme update? Guessing not, but just making sure.

You can install it by renaming it update.zip and flashing it from recovery. Use whatever method you feel most comfortable with though. Don't wipe prior to installing your theme. It with just install over your current rom and everything should be working normally. Follow any instructions that are on the thread containing your theme though. Some have special instructions to follow in order to make it work. You can basically get this stuff all set up and have your phone ready to activate when verizon comes back online.

Edit: Install the theme the same way as the kernel.

EDIT: Forgot...backup before flashing your kernel and theme just in case something goes crazy!

Alright! So finally, after 3 hours, i got everything setup! Got my baseband updated, buglessbeast 1.1, 1ghz lv kernel, and the smoked glass theme! Top notch! Runs CRAAAAZY fast. So glad I rooted my phone! Now to get my damn phone activated... 4am here i come! haha

Glad everything worked out! I just checked and Verizon is up and you should be able to activate!
