Exclamation <ROM> Samsung Gravity Smart T589 <10/26/11>

This is for the Samsung Gravity Smart T589.

This is a stock 2.2.2 froyo rom that is deodexed and themed.

See post #2 for a odex'd non rooted version.

This was built from a system dump - the firmware hasn't been released yet.
Please note that I am not a developer - just a tinkerer.
This will be installed by flashing through the stock recovery.
There are no custom recoveries available yet for this device.
This has the majority of the bloatware removed.
It will utilize the stock kernel already in the phone.
The ROM download link is provided after the screenshots.
A RAR file download link is provided with the apps that were removed.

Details:

Removed Drivesmart from Settings.
Removed Social Network Key from Settings - hotkey defaults to Facebook
Removed Messaging Key from Settings - hotkey defaults to Message App
Removed Notification Slider from Settings
Removed Software Update from Settings - wont OTA a custom rom
Removed many ringtones and added a few.
Removed Startup sounds and Shutdown sounds.
Removed Startup and Shutdown animations.

Removed the following apps:

Aim - Bejewled - Allshare - DriveSmart - Dual Clock - Cloud Text - Gallery3d - Glympse - Lookout -
MallLite - Maps - Memo - My Account - My Files - Photobucket - Protips - Sticky Message Widget -
Street - Swipe Tips - Talk - Tetris - TeleNav - Uno - Youtube

Added the following apps:

File Expert (has root explorer) - Flash Player - Latest Gmail - Htc Keyboard - Latest Link2sd -
QuickPic (gallery app) - Latest SuperUser + Latest Binaries - Busybox - Latest Terminal Emulator -
Latest Titanium Backup (free version) - Latest Spare Parts Plus

Added 3 build.prop edits.
One for maximum events per second and the other two for sounds.
The default ringtone is from the movie "Crank" - the fading in and out phone tone.
The default notification sound is "Tinkerbell" - lol.
Added a custom boot animation - blue coin.
Added Sd Card speed tweak + battery tweak.
Themed several icons through the IC Menu.
Themed the framework to a black "Sense" theme.
Themed the battery icons.

  • This device has very little internal space, so I have included Link2Sd app.
  • If you wish to utilize this included app, you must do the following prior to installing the rom:

Partition the sd card as follows:

** NOTE - PARTITIONING THE SDCARD WILL ERASE THE CONTENTS **

- first partition will be created as a <FAT32> <Primary> partition.
- (leave about 512mb for the 2nd partition)

- second partition will be created as a <Ext2> <Primary> partition.
- this should be 512mb with 0 swap

Installation instructions:

- partition sd card (this will erase the contents)
- download rom (which is an update.zip for the stock recovery)
- put rom on the sd card
- power off phone
- slide open the keyboard and hold down the <T/5> button and the <Power> button until the recovery appears
- use the <Volume Keys> to scroll to <wipe data/factory reset> and hit the <Power> button to confirm
- use the <Volume Keys> to scroll to <wipe cache partition> and hit the <Power> button to confirm
- use the <Volume Keys> to scroll to <apply update.zip> and hit the <Power> button to confirm
- rom will install and reboot phone automatically
- first boot will take a minute
- open Link2Sd app - inform the app the 2nd partition is a <Ext2> partition and reboot phone
- open Link2Sd app after reboot - hit the <Menu> key then click on <Settings> tab
- check the <Auto Link> box and click on <Install Location> and click <Internal>
- most apps downloaded from market will default to the sd card
- you will have to open Link2Sd app after installing apps and move the app back to the phone
- then you will have to click each installed app in Link2Sd interface and click on <Create Link> and link all thats permitted
- this will solve the majority of the limited space issue with this phone

NOTES:

This phone seems to operate best when the CPU frequencies are set to 320 min and 800 max.
We can't overclock the phone until a kernel is developed. Samsung hasn't release the kernel or firmware yet.
Download No Frills Cpu from the market and set the frequencies to those specs.
The phone is defaulted to 245 min and whatever it needs up to 800.
At 245 minimum, it uses more battery power to "wake" and if it wakes frequently at this setting,
it really adversely effects battery performance.

So now I'm jealous of my wife's phone and want to do this to mine. =)

If I want to have some of the extra apps on there when I install the ROM, can I just unzip your zip file, add them to the system/app folder, rezip the folder, then load it to the sd card and start the process? Sounds simple enough, just wanted to make sure.

the "update.zip" file is "signed" so <NO> you can't do it that way.

you have 3 ways to do this.

one is to take the "extra apps" file and unzip it, put the unzipped folder on your sdcard, try clicking on each app you want to install, then link them to sdcard (w/ link2sd), linking not moving. if they default to sdcard, move them back to phone and then link them. (kinda like picking them from the app market on your computer)

second way if the above way doesnt work... unzip the file, put the unzipped folder on your sdcard, use the file expert app, mount the /system/ folder as read write (file expert settings) and copy and paste the apps you want to install to your /data/app/ directory, set permissions for each app you moved and reboot, then link them all with link2sd

third way is with sdk tools - adb - unzipping the file and pushing the apps you want to /data/app/ directory

Thanks again!

I ended up just installing the ROM and getting a few of those apps from the Market. I was a bit nervous last night when my wife went to bed and I told her I'd get her phone running smooth, only to mess it up and have it not boot. By the time she woke up all was back and she was only missing a few contacts. Phew! I couldn't have done it without this, again many many thanks. It's a major improvement over the stock phone.

I installed this rom. No issues there. Perfect directions.

For some reason I no longer seem to have GPS function. I use the google maps navigator quite often. It just says searcing for GPS signal or something along those lines. Even downloaded a couple of apps that give GPS info and they show nothing.
I used to have that little satellite icon in the top status bar and now there is nothing there.

Please Help.

you will have to ask the guy that made the ams zip - i have no knowledge of what modifications he has done to this rom. its an entirely different project thats based on this rom from an entirely different person. i do not support or encourage using that rom.

I have tried the ams versions too. They seem very unstable compared to Arhtard's version.

Thank you for your reply. I got my sd card to work and used your update.zip file. Everything installed fine then I went to link2sd and it says no sd card present again. There is no sd card available in the settings menu either. Do you know of a command for terminal that will mount the sd card.

just curious, did you partition AND format your sd card?
this sounds like its not formatted, i made the same mistake one time and ended with the exact same results as you're describing.

check if you've formatted it and get back to me

Thanks. Each card until the last one had been formatted with the fat32 and ext2 partitions. I would try different paritition scenarios and nothing would make the sd card available. Twice I inserted new sd cards formatted in fat32 which were recognizable. Once I got it to recognize this latest card in fat32, I haven't tried partitioning it. Thanks for the help.

ahh yeah.
if you partition it in the wrong order it wont show as available or existing for that matter.
its simple but tricky to partition it correctly - a small mistake will make it "not there"
i recommend trying it again, partition it, you'll like the link2sd feature, start with the fat 32 partition as PRIMARY and leaving 248 to 512 mb free then partition the 2nd partition ext 2 PRIMARY with whatever space is left. then format the fat32 partition if the program didnt for you.

if you're into changing roms, i know you'll try it eventually, lol.
let me know if you need further help.

Yeah. I will try again once I have a spare sd card. I can't mount the old cards even when formatted to fat32. This one works for now, so I am leaving as is. Keep us posted on new developments. Thanks.

Can this be used with the Canadian version of the phone (Galaxy Q)? I'm on Rogers right now and in accounts/sync one of the options are to save my T-Mobile contacts. Will this just save my normal contacts? Will it cause any problems? I've never done this before, I just want to make sure.

Hey guys, first of all great job finally a rom for this phone.

I am having problems getting it to read the rom,

when I enter recovery mode and follow the steps upon going to install the rom it states
"Finding update package...
Opening update package....
E:Can't open /sdcard/update.zip
(No such file or directory)
Installation aborted"

Can someone help me with this.

Thanks guys

Ok I actually find the problem it was that the card was not primary partition so I fix that problem BUT when I try to use minitool partition to create 2 partitions onf my 8gb SDHC card it will not take, is there a better tool to create two partitions on this type of card?

Other then that I have the new rom installed and working great thanks for the great job Guys.

Question Does this ROM allow us to oc this phone? and is this one of the only ROMS for it?

Can the creator(poster) of this ROM on this thread ...or anyone else here advise if this ROM allows us to overclock this phone after it's installed on the stock kernal? I have found VERY FEW customs ROMS for this phone..even now is this still one of the only custom ROMS for it? if not, where else can I get other ROMs and/or Kernals? My phone is rooted no prob but have had so many problems flashing ROM's/kernals to make oc possible..

Thanks for any help or info on this!

Well, it's done! I was an idiot at first, not realizing that I had to take out the SD card to partition it. (I didn't even realize my PC had an SD reader!) So the first time I tried it, it couldn't find update.zip, and I was left with a wiped phone. Which was actually pretty cool, because like NOTHING was installed. (It was still rooted though, which I found really strange.)

But then I finally figured out the SD thing and everything's working like a champ. Great stuff! (But why can't I uninstall facebook?)

EDIT: sweet, I can uninstall it with Link2SD!

Notsure Lock screen wallpaper

It looks like removing Gallery 3D borked the option to set a wallpaper for the lock screen (Settings|Display|Wallpapers|Lock screen wallpapers). The only choice was Gallery. An install of a working Gallery 3D for Froyo results in a force close error in com.android.settings when trying to access the setting.

Any suggestions or solutions?

We can't overclock the phone until a kernel is developed. Samsung hasn't release the kernel or firmware yet.
Download No Frills Cpu from the market and set the frequencies to those specs.
The phone is defaulted to 245 min and whatever it needs up to 800.
At 245 minimum, it uses more battery power to "wake" and if it wakes frequently at this setting,
it really adversely effects battery performance.
sorry we cant overclock this phone yet

@eggowaffle: SD card partitioning - XDA-Developers is a pretty good guide for what to do to partition your SD card. Use the specifications set out by Ahrtard, though.

Also, this may be obvious, but you have to take the SD card out of your phone and use an SD reader. You can't just do it through USB debugging. (I made this mistake at first.)

Would it be safe to remove the SDcard (when the phone is off of course) after I put some apps on it with Link2SD? The apps will just not show up when I turn the phone back on right? That would be useful to know if I wanted to switch to another SDcard.

Just making sure - update.zip can be deleted because it flashes the update to system memory right? Sorry for the stupid question. I did things like this with my PSP before, but maybe things work slightly different on Android and I would really hate to brick my phone.

You can totally delete update.zip. As for your other question, I'm actually not quite sure what happens. I would guess the apps force close upon opening, and if you have something that autoruns, it would make a chain of force closes. But maybe not.

Keep in mind you can "freeze" apps with Link2SD, so that might be an alternative.

I got this rom on my phone and now I can't accesss my sd card via my ps3. Whenever I link my phone to my ps3 via usb, it gives me the prompt, like it should and i can click it and it appears on my ps3. But when I attempt to open it to access my files, the phone kicks back out to the original screen(click to connect via usb). I'm not trying to blame the rom, but it worked before I got this rom. Other than this, it works great and I am very happy with the change. I have not tried to connect to an actual pc because I dont have one and I only have internet access via the public library and they wont allow me took connect my phone to their computer.

Question questions about this custom rom

Firstly, thanks Arhtard for being one of very few who ever made a custom rom for this phone. I personally didn't use it long (the phone) as I only got this free and played around with it for a few weeks but am giving it to my wife now so I figured I'd give this rom a shot.

It looks good. Runs good. Like it. Couple of questions though:

1. I know about the internal mem limit and thus the main issue with this phone was the capacity issues and was practically useless unless rooted and using an app2sd program.. which is what i did and was able to install a ton of apps until finally the internal mem hit it's limit (which is actually around 17 to 18 mb remaining). Now when u get the phone stock or do a factory reset/wipe it starts out with saying that there is 171 mb remaining. Like I said, with that and being rooted and using app2sd I was able to install a ton but after installing your rom I only start with 91 mb remaining..a full 80mb less off the start...?? now obviously i'll be using the link2sd app you installed with the rom but wont i actually get less space and less ability for apps now? why so much space used up at onset of rom? I thought with what you stripped, that 171 might go to 180 or something (only 189 to start on phone) but down to 91..?that's puzzling and making me think i'll get a lot less overall when installing apps even when moving to sd(cuz a little always gets used even installing apps2sd).

2. Can i no longer edit the 4 icon shortcut bar on the homescreen menu? I know on the stock i changed it and swapped a few icons but can't seem to now. Is that so?

3. On a later reply in this post you mentioned Samsung having released some firmware/updates or something but nothing else came after that.. did this change or update anything to do with the phone/your rom? (mainly curious if any kernels have been created to allow for oc of the phone..i doubt that'll ever happen for this older lesser phone but heck..ya never know).

4. i see you installed flash on this somehow (v10.1) and works for some web stuff but i assume there is no way to update to 11 or any newer versions as they come out, correct? i dunno why even some simple older data on some websites still ask for latest flash when older version , like this one would definitely work to view it! go figure..

That's it i guess... and again.. nice ROM. Good job and surprised you even (tinkered) to create this. hopefully you even see this post and can answer this.. if so, greatly appreciated and if not, oh well.

btw, does anyone know a link to get the stock rom for this phone from? (i'll want it for backup and to use in case need to flash back to stock) thanks

Default Stock Rom for this phone.

Arhtard- You wouldn't happen to have the stock ROM for this phone would you??? If not, could you please tell me where or how I can get it?
If anyone else has the same information, I would appreciate it.

Thanks,

Charlie
