I have the one with the chin (not the Sprint one). It's matte black and the case is made of a nice, rubberized, soft material. I was wondering how well the finish holds up (does it chip, scratch easily, etc.)... do I need a case? I usually carry the phone alone in my pocket and usually wear jeans.

Hmm. Myself, I have one of those phone sock things, more to protect the screen when it's in my pocket. But I'm also paranoid about scratching the finish, so it works out quite well.

I have had my Hero for about 14 months now and never used a case - the matt finish is unblemished. There isn't really any need for a case in my opinion, except perhaps to protect the screen.
